    NYC advice...

My sister-in-law in Vermont is getting married this summer and I'll be celebrating with her at the end of August...

The exciting part (for me) is that I arranged to fly in and out of NYC and will be spending two nights in the Theatre District.

I already have tickets for Spamalot... (always have been a huge fan)... but I have no idea what I'll be doing with the rest of my time.

    Any advice?

Visit Hackensack. It's beautiful in August.

You need to decide (or mention) what sorts of things you like to do or are interested in. There are only about 10000 worthwhile things to do, so narrow things down a bit. Also, there have been a large number of threads detailing NYC suggestions, you might want to look through those. Personally, if I were visiting, I'd be sure to take in some music and meat (steak, pastrami, etc.) or some other foodstuff. Any night you're here there's bound to be more than a few good music acts worth catching.

edit: start here with the threads, bkln links to two other NYC threads. Yeah, most of them aren't too useful, but there should be a lot that is.

the most important thing you could possibly do is come to a NYC maggot get-together that'll be arranged for your trip.

    that's what I would do.

ps.. i just enjoy walking around the city. yeah you can do all the touristy stuff, but you really get a cool experience when you just walk aimlessly in any ginormous city, especially NY..

Definitely go down to SoHo and the West Village for an afternoon and evening. Those are the parts of Manhattan that (to me) are what you would expect least out of Manhattan. It's cool to walk around aimlessly, but you might wind up in one of the many parts of New York that aren't that nice or interesting- why waste your time? It's August, it's going to be hot, and wandering the streets in 95 degree heat with no idea of where your next Dean & DeLuca iced coffee is coming from is not my idea of a good time.

Don't do touristy stuff, do normal stuff- leave some shit you need for the wedding unbought, pick out a good restaurant- and realize what the benefits of living here are.

Ride the Staten Island Ferry, take one of those double decker tours, go to the observation deck on top of the GE building in Rock Center, eat in Chinatown, stroll through Central Park, go to the Met and the Modern, and, most important, find a cool street corner in the Village with an air conditioned window seat and a cold drink and watch the freaky parade go by.

Benny does all these things time to time, when he has time, and he's a New Yorker. Again.

If you ever have the chance to do this, I highly recommend wandering around the West Village, LES, UWS, etc. - basically any old Manhattan neighborhood. Find a bar that's filled with locals - you can tell 'cause the average age is above 40 - sit at the bar...

... and listen. I have heard some of the greatest storytellers in no-name bars around the country, but Boston and Manhattan take the cake.

I spent so much time in one place on Amsterdam Ave. during the Republican Convention that I asked Dexter to meet me there.

Go to Black & White and ask Michael Imperioli what was supposed to happen at the end. You can thank me later.

I like Steves idea, we need to get together and drink again anyway. When are you going to be here?

Yeah i agree with all of the above

Since you are only here for a couple days it would be crazy to rush around the city trying to see all the tourist sites so i would second the plan of finding a couple good restaurants, relaxing, taking a walk around the village and take it all in. No need to get on a tour bus or wait in lines with the rest o' the tourists in the August heat.

And yeah let us know the date and we can have an August maggot meet-up.....

    Maggot get together for sure!

Count me in SandyGal, and let us know the days once you're sure so we can plan something.

BeanDip knows all the good restaurants...so a nice meal and drinking should be on the horizon. This will be fun!

CUBuck keeps moving closer to my building, raps bartends on my street at the same place Honc used to bartend (although the two of them may not know that)...I'm going to ride my heelies down there later on, order a few PBR's while wearing my trucker hat, and then hit the thrift store for some skinny jeans. Then I'll move to Williamsburg, in a very ironic way.
