    Eye Safety

How many of you have hit your face while surfing? Your eye? What were the circumstances?

Do they make gogs that stay on? I do water stuff in rec specs but they come off pretty much instantly when I hit the water.

    Also, crazy story.

I'm obviously not going to be getting too radical, but my avatar is my "good" eye so I want to be as safe as possible.

Hmm, looks interesting and they're right near here.

What happens when you eat shit? Will they come off? I know you windsurfer never crash, but what about the rest of us?

Of course the thing is going to come off. It'll probably come off the first time you duck dive.
Think about all the surfers in the world, past and present.
Multiply that number by all the waves that have been ridden.
Now calculate how many have been seriously injured surfing.

See how these guys deal with risk.

You should see me with my Rec Specs and a ghetto yellow leash around my neck. Tuffy can testify -- it's uber-geek.

If ya get a few buddys to go in with you, seaspecs.com
    does a buy 2 get 1 free deal for $40 a pop(3 pair=$120).
They have a strap built in for around the back of your melon, I tie my wetsuit leash to it and haven't lost em yet. They do have a tendency to pop out a lens if you smack the water really hard.

    Gerry Lopez?

    Gerry fecking Lopez?

Willywhit some of your posts have been funny as, but this is just nuts. Lopez doesn't do falling off anymore, he's paid too much to spend time falling off.

Advocating glasses or goggles to any sub pro surfer is a waste of their time and money. As others have said, first duck dive, battle with a clean up set or wipe and those goofy goggles are going to be history.

If you must protect your eyes, put a condom over your head and cut out a mouth hole. The vision will be blurred but at least you won't look stupid like people who wear goggles.

I really did see a movie years ago of Gerry at G Land talking about how your eyes get blazed sitting in the water for hours , all the reflection.Kinda like super sunny places like nor cal/ tahoe skiing.I've heard stories about wicked sunburns and scorched eyes when tourists don't plan ahead.
Maybe get a helmet like Tom Carroll with the flip down visor, now THAT' S CORE

Your mom didn't think I was so stupid looking last night. But she couldn't quite see with all the jizz in her eyes.

I wear glasses because I can't see without them and after 5 eye surgeries I can't wear contacts.

I also need protection becase a non-severe blow to the eye could blind me. It's worth the risk to get out and have fun, but I want to mitigate the risk as much as possible.

you wouldn't want a bunch of teenage guys out in the line up thinking you don't look cool.
I've surfed with one contact lens and it's impossible, screws up your depth perception and timing.
I'd get some good squash type glasses for your prescription and just make sure they're tied on and ya won't lose them. Maybe even some polarized ones.

what the hell happened to your eyes that you needed 5 operations? I just went to the eye doctor for an exam and my eyes take a beating, I got scolded.
Gotta get Lasik one of these days.

I was born with some kind of anterior chamber defect -- my pupils were shaped like a cat's. Had some surgery when I was a year old to correct that. My left eye never learned to see, but my right eye was OK.

In highschool I developed Glaucoma in my right eye and had 2 surgeries to help with pressure but all they did was wreck my cornea. After a year of legal blindness I had a third glaucoma surgery and then a cornea transplant and cataract surgery my senior year of college.

So I'm pretty stoked to be able to see at all and am not that concerned with looking like a kook. I think that kind of confidence is what makes Shorey's mom so into me. Or maybe it's just that she's a dirty slut.

    Oww,

    OK, I'll play.

My mother adopted the form of the whelk and guess what... you got a big load of Shinjuku treatement that's reserved specially for Kooks. Well done.

Now, seriously, you seem like a bright guy so why the fuck should you attempt a high impact sport like surfing if a "non-severe blow" in your remaining eye would cause blindness? It's not worth the risk unless you can play the piano like Stevie.

I couldn't imagine life without surf, but grow the fuck up and step away from the shore line. One eye left and you'd be so stupid as to trust goggles in the surf? Deal with it like an adult, goggles will count for shit...but of course, as a surfer you knew that didn't you?

PS - Would you like me to post the above to you in braille format Kook?

Because it's fun. I don't think of surfing as a high-impact sport, but I'm wondering what others' experiences are with it -- hence the post. Why don't you contribute and let me know if you've ever popped you eye while shredding?

I think of football, soccer, boxing as high-impact sports. So I don't do those things. But I do skateboard, snowboard, ride bikes, etc. Yes I could hit a tree on my bike or pop myself in the face via a mis-landed tre, but it's worth the risk to me for the better quality of life it brings. My eye doctor, one of the leading cornea surgeons in the nation, agrees with me.

But by far the most dangerous thing I do is giving it to your mum from behind. Besides the risk of a thousand sailors' diseases, there's her tremendous weight to consider. But it does feel good to give to Charity.

Weird, a friend of a freind from Bozeman had the exact same thing happen (eye got poked out) on a Costa Rica trip from the tip of his board. He has a lazy eye now, is blind in that eye, and it took him a looong time to pay off the bills.

I don't know why the fuck I actually want to help you - perhaps it's because if you go blind you and your fantastic humour will be lost from the TGR boards forever. To assume surfing is any less of an impact sport than football is wrong IMHO. If you are anything less than Lopez then kiss goodbye to goggles within minutes. I've not done my eyes in other than salt sting and sun light in long sessions, but I've dne my ears more than once through falling badly. If you get caught in a nice clean up set and goof up your paddle steeze then the physical beating will be intense and - after your kind words about my dear mother - nothing short of what you're needing anyway.

    Sorey:

While your sudden concern is touching (like your mom), don't forget you came out swinging, saying that people who wear gogs look stupid.

Sounds like there's nothing out there for real protection. So I'll stick with my raquetball glasses and ghetto leash so I can at least see. They fall off, but I just put 'em back on.

It is all fun and games.....

Do the Kareem glasses, or get a visor helmet. I think the more item you wear in the line up the lamer you look. Yet function over rules all fashion, when it comes to being kept out of the line up.

If somebody gives ya shit, poke em in the eye.
If I had a nickel for every wave I caught, I would have a shit load of nickels.
