    Salomon STH 16?

Anyone heard anything about these yet? http://www.untracked.com/p2145c26b39...i_binding.html Sounds like a lightweight S916, but still burley...interesting.

$319?!! You can get real 916's for that same price or less. Lightweight is good, but that price is way too high...

I've got a pair, they're pretty solid. There's way more to it than just a 914 with a 16 DIN spring.

Those Gun labs have a wood core.

    Edit:
    S914: 4.7 lbs
    STH16: 5.1 lbs
    S916: 6.4 lbs

Intersting Douglas calls them the Gun Lab & at a 202cm. From what I know and what I have been told by few Salomon Athletes (including one who has a pair) I am pretty certain this ski is the XWing Lab & is a 198cm not a 202. Kaj & Cody KILLED it in the Verbier Extreme comp this year riding this ski. Still, at 198cm they are mutha truckin & no slouch!

    bump... for slight digression

So whats the deal with the STH 12? Is it a Z12 with more metal/less chance of breakage? In the toe as well as the heel? Nothing in the new solly binder thread about these yet - unsurprisingly. Most of the info is on the 16, nothing of real value on the 12 that I could find.

at ~#145 I don't NEED the din range of binders to max out at 15+ (set at 9-10). I'd be happy to run bindings that top at 12 if they weren't all plastic and give me the uneasy feeling that they'd blow up on me - something I've previously experienced. Generally only way that you can find binders with enough metal in them that they don't disintergrate/feel as though they will is to go bigger din 'race' binders or older models. Will these break that trend?

Wait, so its all metal, except the tow wings, and heel cup?

WTF is the point of that? I'd rather have it the other way around, the parts that touch the boot are the first things (besides screw housings and heel track) that should be metal. So you get most of the weight of a metal binding, and very little of the durability. I don't get it.

    Huh? Replaced with what?

Im asking the same questions leroy.

STH 16 = 916 heel (ie. worm spring) and a 914 toe w/ flat AFD & reinforced spring housing. 16 DIN.

    STH 12 = 916 heel and a reinforced z12 toe.

i have never seen a 914 toe wing break off, ever, so i doubt the STH 16 will.

the ak xw lab 198 is cool.

Marshal - Z12 toe - What is it re-inforced with? metal? carbon?

Also anyone who has skied the 'new' z12 - how'd it work out for you? the wings look pretty short to me, which seem not so.....inspiring(?), in the sense of the amount of elastic travel they would allow

the normal z12 toes are hollow. they are solid in the STH.

    Thanks Marshal.

Don't think I'm sold on the 12, see if I can find one to fondle/play with before making judgement though

if you ski at 10 or below, i doubt you'd break one. if you ski over that, you should be on a 16 type binding.

if you want the 916 but complain about the weight, get an STH 16. same but lighter. if you don't give a shit about the weight, then us a comp binding.

but you cannot have it both ways. lighter = less strong no matter how you slice it.

and the bindings retail at approx the same as the z12/914 type counterparts.

Not the weight that intrigued me - although I do agree with your point.

The idea of it being re-inforced is what I was intrested in - but solid plastic or hollow plastic is still not as comforting as metal would be. Plus longer at it in more depth, those toewings look so short... I really like the longer toewings on the 9xx style. Again, they just feel much more re-assuring than that short style on the z12 toe.

meh, like I said, need to look first hand...

    bump...

Bumping this thread to get some more opinions on the STH 12. My girlfriend just picked up a pair of Praxis in a 175 and I am looking for some clamps to put on them. Salomon has always treated me well and has wide brakes easily acccesible or bendable so that's a huge plus.

So what's the verdict on these? Good? Bad?
