1/2 cup shoyu (good soy sauce, not China Lily)
1/2 cup white or rice wine(unsalted)
    1tbsp grated ginger
    1tbsp crushed garlic
    sugar to taste

pour over sliced beef and let marinate for ~1hr

this all approximate, I just mix all the ingedients together until it tastes right.

What you need is a nice Hawaiian style teriyaki beef marinade.

1/2 c. KIKKOMAN soy sauce, 1/3 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. sugar 1 tbsp. minced garlic 1 tbsp. minced fresh ginger, 2 packages green onions, 1 or 2 dashes of roasted sesame seeds or a drop or four of sesame oil.

Heat all the ingredients in order to dissolve the sugar. Do not boil! Heat until all the sugar dissolves. Allow to cool before pouring over meat. Very important to crush or mince the ginger so as much surface area as possible touches the soy sauce. Change the ingredients in size if you need to marinate larger pieces of meat, a la Penelope's left side. The above amounts are a ballpark, I always do it by taste. You want sweet but not too sweet, just don't put in too much sugar to the point where it won't dissolve.
