The conditions yesterday at Berthoud were just about as good as you can have ! I was totally surprised. I took off Tuesday morning with little idea of how this spring snow would ski and I got the surprise of the season ! pulling into the parking lot at 8:00am the wind was howling, visibility was poor, and both me and my buddy were questioning our decision to hike ? Well we at least have to try it right ? Oh man would I have kicked my own ass if I would have missed those turns ! 12-15" of some of the most consistent snow one could wish for. It was actually not so much about depth but how great this snow was turning, it put you in total control allowing for bigger faster and deeper carves than I deserve. I'm still high from it !
Well we were so inspired by the conditions we ended up hiking over 4000' and even that wasn't enough so we took some "freebie" runs out of the parking lot. It was simply just a perfect day ! except for one minor detail. the hiking was tough from 8-10:30. We were the only people on the entire pass and there was not a single trace of any old bootpacks so our first hike was a total posthole. Our second hike was slightly better, although our tracks were partially filled in. On our third hike we had definitely established " The Staircase". On our 4th hike though another car was in the lot, no big deal right so now there are all of 3 people on 1000 plus acres. Well this "person", we never saw who it was, decided they would skin directly in our bootpack ! so after all that work our staircase is now a mushed out skin track. Thanks ASSHOLE !
