Skinny on Digitalnerds.com

So, I just pulled the trigger on a Canon G7. I purchased it on-line for $353 shipped to UT. I've never heard of the company, but it was a "featured company" on everyprice.com Does anyone have any info. on the rep. of digitalnerds? Also, any accessories that I should consider with this camera (e.g.: extra battery; memory card; wide angle lens, etc.?)

hmm. digitalnerds.com seems to be a parked domain with a search engine redirector on it, are you sure that's the right address?

Doesn't look good.

They have almost no rating at all. A lot of scam ridden online camera shops will change their name every six months or so to erase their bad ratings. These guys could be legit but they would have had to have just opened their doors or do so little business that they don't have enough customers to rate them.

Good luck.

Buy a new (bigger) memory card. Get at least a 1 Gig card, they're cheap and worth every penny.

Whoa. Good thing I paid by credit card. I figure that there is no way that I could get ripped off. However, I would be bummed if I don't get the camera, and I have to initiate a charge back.

Memory card and an extra battery seem to be next in line.

THANKS!

I agree with Tippster, large cards are worth the extra coin.

As far as being ripped off, you probably won't be, not exactly. If these guys are running the usual scam, what will happen is you will get a phone call or an email asking you to call them to "confirm" your order. Then they will try to pressure sell you uber expensive accessories. Normally priced 5 or 6 times what they should be. If you don't buy any of them then you will get a call back in a few days informing you that your camera in "back ordered" and you will have to wait 3-4 weeks for it to get in. Then if you cancel your order, of course it will take 6-8 weeks for your refund to be processed.

I ran into this, or some variation if it, a couple of times, years ago when I first started buying camera gear online and didn't know any better. Now there are only three or four online dealers I will buy from unless I get a recommendation from somebody I trust.

There are a lot of smaller online sellers who are legit and just don't get much traffic. Hopefully these guys are one of them and you won't have to deal with any of the ridiculousness that I mentioned.

third the large card. 4GB high-speed cards (SDHC Class 6 or SD 133/150x) can be had for < $50.

The high-speed bit makes a difference.

This is exactly what happenned. This morning, I called (in response to an e-mail). I was told that I forgot to order a memory card. I was offerred a 1 gig SD high speed card for $129, a 2gb SD HS card for $179 or a 4gb SD HS card. I knew that I needed a card, but I balked. I wound up buying the 2GB card for $149.
Next, they tried to sell me a case ($20), and an extra battery ($50). I didn't bite.
I was told that the total for the camera and the card shipped for $510, and that I will have them w/in 7 days. Still, a pretty good deal for this set up. I will report again when I receive it.

Is there any diff. between an SD high speed 2GB card for $25 and $175 (other than $150)?

Holy shit, man. High speed isn't really very descriptive... what did you get? High speed could mean anything from 60-80x/Class 4 to 133-150x/Class 6.
4GB SDHC Class 6 (fast) for $39 (shipped)
2GB SD 150x for $21

Even a spendy Sandisk 2GB extreme III card costs a fraction of $149.

I've read some tales of reliability issues w/ off-brands....

The camera's on Buydig.com for $455 shipped. Went from a really good deal to an average deal. I guess that's their business model....

Oh well. I'm still super-stoked to get the camera.

Camera arrived in new condition. Total cost = $510 shipped.
G7 = $339
Silicon Power SD Ultima High Speed 2GB card = $149
Shipping = $20

I prolly got ripped for the card, but I need the memory, and I'm happy.

actually you were anally gang raped without lube on the memory card. no name brand that is probably not high speed. you can just go to costco and get a good fast 2gb san disk ultra II card for like $60, I think the camera for about the same too.

Just return the card now that they've come through with the camera. If they don't refund your money expeditiously you can file a dispute with your CC bank. They really did rape you on that card. It almost looks like they recovered the margin they lost on the attractive price of the camera.

I know. But what can I do. The disc says "high speed". Searching the web, I could not otherwise find the camera (w/out a card) for less than $450. While I got raped on the card (I suspected that they wouldn't deliver the camera if I didn't purchase the card), I prolly got a fair deal on the set up. I'm not going to cry over $20-$40 (especially when I am not really educated on the price of cameras).

Bio-: That sounds like a plan. But they do charge a 20% "restocking" fee. That's $30.

i'm happy that you got the camera, but $510 is not worth the frustration. you would've gotten the exact same deal at amazon, but for a cheaper card with slightly more expensive camera.

edit, i just checked amazon:

powershot g7: $463.99

your option for a 2-gig card:

Kingston 2 gig: $18.99
SanDisc SDSDH-2048-901 2 GB: $28.88
Platinum "60x" 2GB: $39.90

so, even with the extra name brand memory you are still below $510.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I paid $10-$20 too much (or atleast more than the Amazon deal). And that is only if there is free shipping. A bummer, but I can live with it.
(To me it was worth it, in that I received my camera w/in 6 days of order).

I have just learned that my 2GB card reads @ 12mb/sec. and writes at 8mb/sec. I know next to nothing about cameras, but that seems pretty damned fast.

He should not have purchased ANYTHING from those assholes, AKA Broadway Photo.

B&H:

G-7: $453.95

Sandisk 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card: $34.95
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...II_Secure.html

Shipping: About $10

Total: about $499

I would have ordered from B&H. Not only would it have cost a little less, but he would also have received a good SD card, and complete peace of mind.

I'm assuming this is what was purchased:

AP et. al.: Reading those reviews was like DeJaVu' and "Welcome to my Nightmare". Fuckers. Oh well, live and learn. Atleast, I got the camera with a 80x card.
Let this thread be a warning to others not to buy from these scam artists!

Bad on me!!
