Question WTF? Car break in / insurance question

    So fucking pissed right now.

For the second time in a year my car got broken into. Different location of Seattle, same asshat motherfucking meth heads looking to break shit. Entire back window smashed in; the onlyl thing in my car was my pack. Bastard took some large object and smashed it against my window, causing exterior damage to the car & entire window. Took my pack - which had my skins & shovel/probe.

    ? on Insurance.

Should I claim this? Is it worth it?

Window costs will be about $400 (larger rear window)
    cost of goods stolen: $500.00

If I should claim it, can I retro claim one from last August? (probably not is my guess)

Now the more difficult part of trying to find a pair of 120 or 110 skins for the weekend. And I have to blow a PTO day from work to take care of this crap.

Ahhh shitty...based on my limited experience, I think you can claim the pack and it probably is worth it depending on what your deductible is. Did you file a police report already? And make sure you can prove value on the pack- they can be sticklers on that stuff.

As for last summer, I doubt it.

    Good luck!

Sorry to hear about that.... I know for sure that the stuff inside of the car will not be covered on the auto policy. You would have to claim the pack on a renters or homeowners policy. The deductable on the renters or homeowners policy is probably 500 so it would be a wash---do not claim the pack! As for the window what is your deductable? In some states a comprehensive loss which is what this is does not count against you.

Depends on how much your deductible is. If it's $250 or less, then I'd go ahead and file a claim. If it's $500 or more, you'd probably be better off taking the hit yourself. You'd be out the $500 anyways and there's a good chance your insurance company would raise your premiums if you were to file a claim.

You might be able to retro claim one from last August, but it would be a separate claim, subject to a separate deductible.

Send me a PM if you'd like me to go into more detail about any of this.
I think that the human mind is unique among all other forms of life in that it can spontaneously create unique thoughts and provide unique behaviors. Instead of rewarding that uniqueness we, for some reason probably because of cultural and social necessity, we chastise unique behavior and reward conformity.

waiting for police to call me back, since it's not more than $1500 of damage, they do the report over the phone.

$500 deduct - so not sure if it's worth it (once again) to claim as the insurance rate is likely to climb if I do claim it. But seeing that I'm in meth head break-in neighborhood, maybe I should in case it happens again?

this fucking sucks and puts a serious dent into my SA savings.

Awww. Squirrel. What a bummer! I'm so so so sorry to hear! It can't hurt to talk to your insurance agent. Discuss what would happen if you claimed it.... will your ins go up and by how much. I've done this before w/ my agent. It will probably be worth a claim in this case. Like girlski said, file a police report first. Make a list of all the stuff you had, including brand, and look up the prices on the Internet.

    Hope it all works out

Thanks - that's kind of what I thought. Pretty much screwed either way.
Last time I ate the $400 or so (did not take anything from car)

This time, claiming $500 on the stolen pack + $500 for damage ~ with potential for future break in's in this area, trying to figure out if it's worth it or not vs. increase in annual premium.

Edit: good idea, MBSC - I'll call my agent but was trying to avoid alerting them in the first place

    That sucks.

Are you sure that's all you had in your car?

Not sure my spare skins would be fat or long enough (mid 90's 180ish) but you're welcome to borrow them.

^^^ This guy is right- the pack would be claimed on your homeowners/renters insurance. Therefore, with the window "only" costing $400 to replace, claiming that on your auto insurance wouldn't make any sense. That fucking sucks, man.

By the way, even if he could claim this stuff on his auto insurance, his rates wouldn't go up. Its not a big claim amount, and it wasn't his fault. The police report takes all blame away from him. Same thing happened with me and my homeowners insurance when someone stole my golf clubs from my garage.

If this keeps happening you might want to weigh the cost of going with a lower deductible. It might be less than the $900/yr you've already lost in damage (pack not included because it most likely wouldn't be covered).

Looks like I will need to claim it - the window that is.
Figured the pack probably wouldn't be covered, but i'll have to talk to my agent abou that.

Asshole smashed the window that had my antenna, which means it the estimate is $800 to fix. MOTHERFUCKINGASSHOLEFUCKFACEPIECEOFSHIT

quotes ranging anywhere from $525 to $800 to fix this?

If I ever catch this guy breaking into another car, i'm going to beat him fucking senseless.

Sucky. As others have said, you would have 2 claims- the stuff in the car on your homeowner's/renter's and the window on your auto.

Your rates won't necessarily go up. I crashed into another vehicle on a snowy day 3 or 4 years ago, but my rates didn't go up at all, mostly b/c I had been with state farm for a long time. There are benefits to sticking with the same insurance company rather than always searching for the best deal every year or two.

Maybe it's time for a new neighborhood, unless cooking meth for your neighbors is how you support your carefree ski-travellin' lifestyle

Dammit dude. Sorry to here about that.

My skins are cut for skinny skis or you could have em, unless you want to borrow some skinny skis as well.

Lemme know if you need to borrow shovel/probe/pack for a bit (doubtful with the corn but I'm not using them right now anyway.)

Having this happen twice in one year at different locations = suxors.

    Thanks all for the replys.

I s/w my agent and looks like the claim is the way to go. WA law prohibits them from raising my premiums unless I make 4 claims or more in a year under comprehensive. Because the window damaged includes the antenna and partial to the casing/molding that holds the glass in.

GB- I've got State Farm and yeah, they've been really good about rates to me for being with them for so long. Definitely not worth changing for the 'cheaper options'

    Sucky man, that truly blows.

I was in pretty much the same position a couple years ago, but mine did wash, so no claim. (biggest loss was a big book of cd's from under the seat that conveniently isn't covered under renters or auto w/out special riders)

I have an extra shovel and probe if you need for the weekend, let me know.

Just wanted to point out that this is strong to very strong. Good show BH!

Squirrel - like I said this morning, when you get around to replacing this stuff with new stuff I've got yer back. Sounds like you've got a pile of loaner gear at your disposal there in the PNW.
