I red pointed a longstanding project of mine "THE SUPER GNAR" (5.3c X) the other day.

    It was pretty epic.

This is 100% the truth. There is pretty much nothing to do up here during the "shoulder" seasons of Spring and Fall so management trys everything they can to open early and stay open late. Last weekend we had 20+ people stay in our hotels on ski packages. If it wasn't for skiing NONE of those people would have come up here and spent their $$$$.

Totally off subject, but does someone have pictures of Mineral Basin? I'd just be curious as to what it looks like this time of year. I'd like to make it out to Utah this time of year for some hiking and skiing.

Ok. I skied up there today. I guess I suck for posting that earlier quote from someone who made it sound like it was simply an employee problem. It's much more than that this year.

After seeing how much melted in the last six days, and after talking with APD while up there, I can see there's no way they could possibly make it through to next week. It's going too fast. This is definitely one year that the earlier closing can only be blamed on conditions.

I admit: THE CURRENT SNOW MANAGEMENT TEAM IS NOTHING LIKE THE OLD SNOW MANAGEMENT TEAM. The old guard wouldn't have even stayed open for this weekend--there's too much dirt showing. I'm impressed with the new progressive attitude that the new guys have. Thanks to all of them for a longer season than we probably deserved to have. It was really fun today.

Looking into MB I can see that there is continuous snow all the way down to the chair. MB looks to be in much better shape snow wise than the LC side. Maybe in future lean years they can consider only opening MB from 7AM to noon or something for the perfect corn, and then just closing for the day, kind of like Mt. Hood does. They could do this through Memorial most years. It looks to me like they could have done it this year. They'd have to pull some snow down to keep Road to Paradise open for intermediates but, if that's not important, then they've got enough snow right now to allow dropping off before the road gun for skiing all the way down.

Anyway, it's something to consider. Have fun everyone who's still able to go up this weekend!

    367 inch + 15 to 20 degrees above average weather= 05/20/2007 closing.

I think we were lucky to make it this long...

Yes I will, because I love the bird because pow there lasts longer than Alta, & Alta Ski School that takes beaters where I wanna go.

I have rarely seen ski school on No. Baldy @ the 'bird, I can't say that about Alta Ski School aka the locusts of Alta. As much as I hate this, I still love alta, but I still ride the bird 2/3 to 3/4 of the time, less hiking, more sick lines & more walk on trams w/ the p-dog lift.

Plus, remember the bird stayed open 'til July 4th in '05.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, but you old guys can keep skiing alta, I just ride collins & widcat @ alta and thats it for inbounds days, unless I'm going into alta backcountry. I just have grown to love Snowbird, I have found sick unskied chutes in No. Baldy and the backside of the cirque by mid-day in my last three years (I skied Alta more in my first two seasons) of really sking the 'bird!!!!! You could never find that at Alta.

Honestly, in five years of having a dual pass, I have noticed difference in pow lasting longer, and more drops off the cirque are not bumped up.

I love both places (I'll have a dual pass again next year) but those are the differences I have noticed.

If any of SL,UT Utards make it up to Jackson Hole, I'm up in the Teton Nat'l Park until late Sept. I'd love to have beer or two with ya maggots I know.

    Alta v. Snowbird

I switched over to Snowbird a few years back and have had an Alta/Bird pass until this season. I found that I only went to alta on the days that snowbird's tram line was packed and the bc was undesireable. I think the terrain differences are numerous between the two and alta takes the cake on low vis days due to the mass quantity of tree skiing. snowbird has gad II for that but the lift is slow, which can also work to your advantage on those days. for bluebird days, snowbird just has terrain that is more to my liking and they open more terrain quicker than alta.

snowbird has blindside snowboarders, which does make me a bit uneasy. add skull candy to the mix and you have a blind and deaf projectile. but i'll still take that over the alta attitude that is down right lame. the small percentage that cause the problem are the loud majority that are heard and seen. however, snowbird does have its fair share of colorful people but most don't seem to think they are the next ultimate fighting champion.

all that said, i'll still ski alta just because it is a good mountain. the overly entitiled minority just add levity from an outsiders perspective.

he actually talked to mongo, who happens to be head of patrol. Before I started there I had no idea who actually ran the show. There are so many supervisors and snow safety people that it's hard to tell. the only steves' we have left on patrol are miller and mendiola and they are regular trollers.

    Thanks for the pics, Skidog.

From what I understand, this is pretty rare to see the Bird this sparse. But I think I'd still be willing to make the trek...

We did Baldy Main Chute it was windblown dust on crust, but once the new snow corns up the new stuff could be great corn.
