I'm pretty sure you can find P+Ss that allow to shoot .tif, which is a "universal" lossless format

Canon A-series and S2/S3 w/ the hack talked about here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=305198

Panasonic lumix fZ8 does too, though not terribly compact.

apparently a pretty sweet hack, if you're nerdy enough to get into it.

deciding factor in my decision to go w/ the canon s3.

The Nikon Coolpix 8700, etc… shoots raw. It’s P+S, but a bit bigger than most p+s cameras (but still much smaller then most SLR’s).
The problem with shooting raw or .tiff on a point and shoot camera is that they typically have a very small (if any) memory buffer. So if you’re trying to shoot skiing or any sort of action, you are severely limited by the speed of the memory card.
Raw and .tiff files are so big, it takes a relatively long time to transfer the image to the memory card. And in the meantime, the camera won’t take pictures.
I was using a sandisk extreme IV, which was reportedly the fastest card available, and still could barley shoot skiing in raw format.

I agree with this. The nice thing about the cannon hack is that you can choose to shoot first in series RAW then JPG. Also, there is a shortcut where I can toggle between raw and jpg in two clicks- really helpful.

If you can find a few year old Fuji s7000 they also shoot raw. However, they are about the same size as a new Nikon d40.

But I love mine...its been good to me.
