Did the Ophir to Telluide ski yesterday. After a 3,000 boot climb out of Ophir we crested the ridge at 12,850 ft. between San Joaquin Peak and K12. It had snowed 18” five days earlier and then gotten real warm with little wind. The top of the entire 2-mile wide Bear Creek Basin had frozen perfectly smooth with not a track in it. We sat down to have a snack before climbing the last few hundred vert to the peak and a face with an aspect that was warming in the sun. I set my cellophane wrapped big chocolate chip cookie down on the snow and it immediate took off sliding down the fall line before I could grab it. I watched it accelerate and rip down over several rollers and finally out of sight. After climbing the peak and skiing some velvety corn I came upon my cookie at the bottom of the basin. It had smoothly straight lined about 1,000 vert without flipping or breaking. As I finally enjoyed my snack I couldn’t help thinking that my cookie was getting better action than most of my friends who have hung up their boards for the season.
