Whos gone from boarding to skiing?

Who here has gone from snowboarding to skiing. I think skiing is a more natural posistion to move down the hill. I just took up snowboarding cause of my skater roots. I think I might be able to pick up skiing after a season, and maybee get to explore more of the mountain...Id like to hear from others who have done the same thing.

    Thanks,

    Dan

1st, make sure you have a secure base:

Hook with your leg. Place your outside foot down just behind the other foot. Transfer your weight to the back foot and hook your inside leg around the front of the pole, getting a good grip right behind the knee

Arch your body. To finish off, arch your body backwards, lowering your hand to allow for a deeper arch. This is where flexibility comes in. Arch your back only as far as you feel comfortable and make sure that you have a good grip with your leg and your hand.

Oh, wait...you said Skiing. Damn it.

Try your ankles behind your ears. I think that position would be more natural for you.

You are a stoner. Stoners are only allowed to snowboard.

Seriously though, you'll hate skiing because it will take way longer to get to your current level of (in)competence.

I do both. Boarding hurts my knees less so I do more boarding than skiing.

never been on two planks before? give it a try it is fun! im a boarder now thru and thru but i started on skies many years ago and it can be fun (i guess ). one clear advantage skiers have in the backcountry is going places where there are some flat zones to go thru between downhills. i usually hate transitoning my split for those zones and end up booting/postholing which can be NOT fun.

    it's all good

last saturday at Killington, the skiing looked way more fun than the boarding due to some sweeeet hero bumps. I can whack through bumps on a twintip in hardboots but it's not the same fun.
On the other hand, skiing in mashed potaters is a good way to wrench a knee and lots of folks were bailing at 11 due to these conditions.
Stick to boarding, unless you're already good at skiing.
Boarding, like sinecure said, is much easier to get good at than skiing.
I bought some skiis/bindings/boots/poles last season after over 10 years of no skiing.I never got around to mounting them up.
Sinecure and I do the hybrid version of boarding. Long stiff race boards and hard boots. Lately, I'm into wider race boards. 18 cm wide puts you at really steep angles and it's like riding a balance board. 23 wide is more fun,IMHO.
oh yeah, and learn to kitesurf....on the snow

Skiing is not the same as it used to be, at ALL. So, when people say "I started skiing, and I got bored, so I started snowboarding", I can understand. But when the same people still hold that image in their head, even though they haven't skied in 10 years, they are missing out. When skis changed about 10 years ago, skiing changed forever. With all of the "new" fat skis, twins, etc...skiing has been able to benefit from the advantages of pow performance, deep carves, etc of snowboarding, but with more speed, stability, and a MUCH easier time with traverses...(ie vail or Keystone outback). I almost feel sorry for slowboarders when I see them hopping down the traverse coming out of the outback, but then I say "well, if you were skiing, you wouldn't be having issues"

I snowboarded for 3 seasons, but I am SO GLAD I went back to skiing 5 years ago. To each their own, and as long as you are having fun, just slay the hill.

    For me,
    skiing all the way....

exactly why I got back into skiing. I keep seeing kids in the park, having a blast. I felt like I was missing out. Started skiing at 3 years old.
I can huck bigger on skiis and would never risk throwing big air on a board like that.
I'll prob spark a heated debate here but I think snowboarding really jump started skiing. Sidecuts, fattys etc. Skiing is cool again !

Started skiing at about 8. Skied through maybe 16-17 then went to college. I managed to skip the 5 year transition period from long, straight and skinny to short fat and shaped somehow.
Friend convinced me to rent in 04/05 for a day. Tried to immediately hand the 170-ish cm skis back to the guy at the rental shop "I know I'm rusty...but these are just retardedly short..." "um....no they're not."

Last year I began snowboarding after trying it once. Some combination of the strange/new feeling + having something new to challenge myself with landed me in a hardcore snowboarding mindset through the rest of 05/06 and into this season. Got 30+ days on a board by the end of Feb w/ a week on Mt. Baker and by then I was able to tackle just about anything on a board. Then somewhere in March this itch started...it started small, I almost didn't notice it...but I think once I met the challenge of becoming a decent snowboarder, my brain said "NOW IT'S TIME TO SKI AGAIN!"

Haven't been on a board since early March, and godamn was trying to ski well again a humbling experience. I didn't have the muscles, the muscle memory and my line choice was way off, especially in bumps. I love both, for different reasons and will continue to do both as long as my body and paycheck allow it.
I have a lot more to learn on both. I'm not where I want to be skill wise no matter what's strapped to my feet so next year I intend to hit both even harder.

Next year I think starting out on skis, and alternating off and on with both will be the best approach. I never had a problem as a skier (in shape from a season) hopping on a board and doing a ton of runs without burning out, but I found out this season, it doesn't work the other way around.

I also picked up a pair of touring skis and will purchase AT bindings/boots to get into more touring next year, and since I didn't pick up a splitboard: I guess that defines which way I tend to lean when I don't have the $ to do both.

I switched from boarding to skiing this year. Over thanksgiving break I broke my latest splitboard (a homemade nitro 181 saber POW swallowtail) on some rocks, and decided to give skiing a try.

Man, I dont think I'll ever board again. I had never skied previously, and I absolutely took to skis from day one. The single greatest thing with skis, that most skiers never think about, is that you have two edges. Skis rip variable terrain better, land jumps/cliff hucks easier (previously, I always had to jump and land toe edge), have more control on steeps, and traverse way nicer. Also, the face shots. Its tough to get a good face shot with a board, but skis you are more "in the snow", and its different feeling. I really dig the bouncing back and forth in powder turns thing. It took a while to gain the required leg muscle to be able to do more then half a dozen turns without my legs cramping up though. The only thing I miss my snowboard on, is when there is a nasty breakable crust.

I've been out probably 40 times this year on skis, and I feel just as confident on them as I did on me ol' snowboard. I still definitely need work on technique, but I can ski the same stuff and have more fun doing it on skis then on a snowboard. Plus, the uphill is so much easier in stiff plastic boots. There is nothing to convert, the traverses are not tiring, and kicking steps in ski boots is so much nicer then in snowboard boots.

I wish I'd switched over years ago. No disrespect to the snowboarder crowd, but I think I was just ment to ski. As long as your having fun out there, it doesnt matter what your form of downhill is.

If your contemplating a switch you probably just suck at riding. Stick it out and itll come around. There isnt a day that goes by that I cant find something to improve on in my riding or new terrain to explore, I never think about what I have strapped to my feet.

Those who say its easy to become good at snowboarding are retarded. Sure it might be easy enough to make it down the hill, but then people will bitch about your snowplowing all their snow. Now while they probably just pizza the whole way as it is, thats not the point, it takes much longer IM0 to become a "good" snowboarder, at least in my east coast upbringing. All you skiers try to carve with just one edge over here on the icecoast, and see how good you are.....

I did just what you describe. I learned to ski when I was young and turned to a strict snowboarder for the last 12 years or so. This winter I decided to get back on a pair of skis again (not fully quiting either sport). Man did/do suck at sking but I had a blast trying to relearn on fat twins (Line Elizabeth). Back when I was skiing they were long, straight and narrow so the transition back was harder then I thought.

I figured since J-Hole is a skiers mountain, I could have more fun on certain days on skis then on my board. But I reiterate, I like both sports and they both have there pros and cons. Don't "switch", just learn to ski and have fun aswell.

    good thought.
Makes me crave a PBR tho. Might have to have a couple at the Winder. Go Wings!
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

I would join you except I am not in what you would call "drinking shape". My room mates and I decided to have a Tiger Woods 07 tourny last night that turned into downing a beer everytime you go in the water, don't get a par or better etc. Then, whoever won a hole got to make rules.

I have been throwing up all damn day... and you know I can hang.

LOL, I basically did the same thing last night while playing Tiger Woods but I didn't have any company. Some call it a problem, I call it dedication.

I started skiing when I was 2 and switched to boarding when I was like 7 or 9, I haven't turned back. I raced ski team in middle school and did telemark skiing one day when I worked at loveland (cake walk).

I think snowboarding is better for a couple of reasons:
    1. you can't twist the knee like in skiing
    2. your equipment should be permanently attatched

for me this is important, I like my knees. Also I don't like to be stranded with out my equipment. For example my friend who ski's constantly looses his skis and it's a freaking huge hassle. try going down a 50+ degree couloir with 1 ski and you will see why it sucks!

on the other hand, it may seem more natural to stand facing down hill.

I think skiiers can huck bigger and still stick it too because of more even weight distribution on the legs.

But you won't see me change, sticking true to the sk8 roots.

I went from skiing for 6 years to snowboarding for 6 back to skiing when I found AT gear. Even if I had heard of splitboards, I would of still got skis. Everyone says snowboarding is easier then skiing, I didn't find it that way, maybe because of waterskiing from 7 years old, not sure.
