    SC Pro Pack Bearings

My '04 SC Blur XC pivots are creaking again. It seems like the "seasonal maintenance" isn't going too far now, I just re lubed the pivots a couple rides ago and its already creaking. So I probably need to replace the bearings, question is do I buy the pro-pack or just the bearings. I guess SC made some type of change to the pivot that is incorporated in the new propacks, but how significant is it? I am just confused by the SC website about the different options.

I'd try emailing Santa Cruz to see what they have to say about it. It's better to get an answer specific to your situation than guess at what you need and be wrong. Maybe they even have one of the older pro packs laying around that they could give to you, there's nothing to lose by asking.

I just received a blur pro pack today for mrs. cowdog's bike. SC will send you new bearings for free (new policy), if you think you can get away with only new bearings.

And the bearings are different, according to an insert with the pro pack, including some new kind of extra rubber seals. I think the pivots are the same, although I won't be certain until I take it apart. There may be more differences. I haven't had time to look very closely yet.

I think that after a few years, I would want to buy the pro pack and do the full maintenance -- that's what I'm doing for her bike. Also note that you will need the SC tool for removing and setting bearings. You might be able to rig something, but personally I would use the tool. It works very well. Unfortunately that ups the maintenance price.

If you want I can post some pictures of the pro pack contents.

    get new bearings.

    pull all the pivots apart.

clean well and then grind down the shafts *EVER* so slightly to tighten up fit. loctite well and reinstall.

    works wonders for me.

Sweet. I'll call SC and see if I can't get some advice and maybe some freebies.
