    Great start to the day

Driving into work this morning, going around 115 km/hr. My car ('92 Cherokee) starts making a really bad thumping noise, sounds like it's coming from right underneath my feet. It was making my whole car vibrate, and I start thinking that hopefully I can make it into work, and I'll have to get it checked out later today.

All of a sudden "whoosh", left front tire gone (I mean completely gone, wheel/tire completely shot across other side of highway), tearing some of my fender off. So I'm now driving on 3 wheels & the hub, skidding from the far left lane all the way to the right shoulder (luckily no one was around me). Come to a stop after probably skidding for well over 100 yards on my hub, immediately call my Dad to come pick me up.

    me: "hey Dad"
him: "hey, did you break down?"
me: "a little worse than that"

Guess I'll find out the damage later today.
Yep, seen this before. Crazy liquor & cheeseburger party got out of control.

You're not dead, so I'd actually call it a pretty good start to the day, considering.

Seriously. Seems like a pretty good way to get dead, glad you didn't.

Thanks guys, everyone at work was amazed I didn't roll or anything (all though I might need some new underwear).

I'm not quite sure what happened, but it looks like my lug nuts worked themselves loose. I've had the car for about 1-1/2 years, but I've never had any work done to the wheels, so if they were torqued properly I don't know how they could have worked themselves loose.

My guess is that I've made a powerful enemy who wants me out of the picture. Ice, how much do you charge for your bodyguard services?

Next time you might think about taking a minute on the side of the road to make sure you car is OK before your tire goes charging through somebody's windshield and kills them.

I had the same thing happen years ago on I-90, headed up to Silver on Christmas morning. At 70 mph the rear drivers-side tire breaks loose and we watch in awe as it passes us and bounces down the freeway. Thankfully at that early hour there was no traffic. We wandered back and found the lug nuts, jacked up the Bronco, put the tire back on and limped into Kellogg.

I bet trying to find those lug nuts on the freeway was an adventure.

I was once nearly run over by a wayward tire, similar situation.

Some pindick redneck slapped huge swamper tires on his 4runner. He's driving towards me when the axle snapped and the wheel (with axle still attached) goes rolling along the street. 38" tires cruising along at 40mph with the axle still on, windmilling wildly. I ended up diving off an embankment trying to avoid it. big fun.
