    Seeking A Profession

    Hey everybody

I just was considering my options for a career and right now am really leaning toward being part of a film crew or even being a pro skiier if i get lucky enough. TGR sounds like a fantastic company to be a part of and i was wondering if anybody could direct me to someone who is part of this crew. I would like to make some inquiries about employement and such. As of now i am a high school student heading into my graduating year soon and would like to be able to take the appropriate approach to being part of an extreme sports team/film crew. So if anyone who reads this can help me or knows someone who can, please let me know, it would be very much appreciated!

    on a serious note-

There are tens of thousands of very talented world-class skiers with the credentials to take a job with TGR or any other film company. Take my advice, start your own gig. If you end up working for another company afterall, your talent will become recognizable to that firm by you first showing your independce and ability to make executive decisions.

Never ever ever work in your passion. Working in your obsession is fine. Not healthy, but fine. But working in your passion - no.

The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.

You could be a Wildland Firefighter. If your good with your money you can work all summer, and then play during the winter. You should probably go to college too:P

Perhaps you can be a professional day dreamer. If that doesn't pan out then I would recommend Swine Fornicator.

Go to school....it gives you a back up, so when you turn 30, you aren't serving banquets at some mountain resort for shit pay trying to finance your video passion. Try a school where you can incorporate your passions.....
Look up Lyndon State college in Vermont, theyu have a ski area management program, as well as a video program. You'll also have time to follow ytour passion, and have access to some great mountains....

Ski whore isn't much of a career. Don't get me wrong - it looks like a fucking blast, but look at Brant Moles now... and that dude is only in his 30's.

    Good Advice

Thanks to those you who put out some helpful tips
But those of you who are just trying to make a funny, forget about it your lame and it makes you look like a tool
Anyways id like to point out that being a pro skiier is quite the pipe dream, i realize. But when i said being part of the TGR team, that means say camera man, cinematographer, those types of roles. Being out there and filming that stuff is just as good as anything, and being part of a team like that who does those great projects. Im trying to look into what kinds of positions there are like that and what kind of credentials i need to get into them. This would give me a heads up and a good indication of whether or not i should persue a career like that. Cause hey, somebodys gotta film em right?

Right. All the cameramen are actually really rippin skiers. I hope you don't think otherwise.

What credentials do you need? None... if you admit that the successful people in the world don't hand out resumes. They're leaders- people give resumes to them... assuming they are so poorly inept to lead they actually have to ask for help.

The defintion of a true leader is NOT what you can accomplish, but rather what you can get other people to accomplish.

I'm a film/video major in college, and I say go to school. Learn as much as you can about the production process, and get really good at more than one thing. Directors need well-rounded workers on a shoot. Learn preproduction, cinematography, lighting, directing, editing, post production, and do as much independent stuff as you can. Luckily while in school, you can write all your production costs off on your taxes. Tape/film stock isn't cheap, and neither is any of the other equipment. Then get a good demo reel together and send it to everyone, but keep doing your own thing. If you have the talent, you'll make it. Bottom line is no one really hires just a cinematographer, or just a sound guy. You might specialize in one specific area, but if you dont know how to do other jobs as well, you aren't very useful. Good luck. Many years of hard work, and high-stress await you. Enjoy

EDIT: I wanted to add, that I am not studying to work in narrative cinema at all. I hate hollywood, and everything it stands for. Sure I like watching movies, but I in absolutely no regard enjoy producing them. I like things that are real. My dream would be to work for a major ski-film production company, or something along the lines of National Geographic. So even though I don't plan on ever working in "show biz" so far as making actual fiction, story-based movies, the experience I have gained by working on set is irreplaceable. It can be applied in the non-narrative world as well, and you'll be better for having been through the process.
