Violent crime encompasses far more than merely gun crime, and there are more reasons to carry a gun than fear of other people with guns.

    My own experience.

I'd be interested in seeing statistics on the number of people shot with their own firearms.
I have no idea what those numbers are, and a quick Google search turned up nothing. But I would guess they are very low. I say this because if they weren't, I would expect the rabid anti gun groups would be parading them around as evidence that people are made less safe by owning a gun. To date, I haven't seen any of them do that. Maybe they are biding their time.

If legislation were introduced that makes sense, I suspect you would find the wagons are not so tightly circled as you might think. As it is, we get legislation that goes after things like muzzle brakes, barrel shrouds, Military-style appearance, and pistol grips on rifles. They have nothing to do with crime. This is pandering to the gun haters, and puts meaningless restrictions on law abiding citizens, nothing more. Of course we are going to oppose it.
Any gun control laws are applied to law-abiding citizens, not criminals who tend, almost by definition, to flaunt the laws. Hence my sympathy with law-abiding gun owners, as well as law enforcement who are presented with unenforeable laws by pandering feel-good politicians. What we need is solutions to gun crime.

    that made me laugh.

Endlessseason nailed it for me. I don't watch the news, I hate the news, because it is never worthwhile news. Death and destruction, fire and mayhem, this is not helpful to me, this is not something I need to know. While I would want to know about a tragedy of this sort of epic proportions, I live close to 2000 miles from Virginia Tech. And between me and them, 32 people surely died that day. I'm not sure sensationalizing the tragedy does anyone any good.

Pure gold, I missed the reason people hate Spook, he seems to be one of the more coherent people on here and makes insightful contributions.

Crass seems to be the reason the majority of Australians I encounter at home now say they "hate americans" (no, the irony of Oz following the US into unfounded wars, then our people blindly hating americans for it is not lost on me) as well as a lot of other nations I've recently travelled to. You sir, are a moron.

As for freedom to bear arms and all that, banning and the gun buy-back scheme worked here, not saying it would in the States, but it's worth a try.

And stopping an armed shooter? VERY hard. If I had a .22 and was a gun-toting psycho, I bet any money I could take you down before you could me. Especially if I hollowed out the tips like a good gun toting psycho. I've trained a fair amount in bare hand/improvised weapon vs. armed combat. With a knife it is very hard, and more difficult with distance. To get an idea try to disarm a friend with a red sharpie, every red mark you get resembles a cut. We had significant injuries in very controlled circumstances, trained people and not overly sharp knives. We all regularly got cuts and there was 1 bad injury even though we were training intensively. To disarm a gunman is almost impossible. Slightly easier with bigger guns at close range in a robbery situation, as soon as it's a 2ft distance or their motive is purely to harm you might as well give up. Try with a paintball gun.

Yes there are weapons you can improvise with: fire exinguishers, ambush tactics, inducing low light and/or blinding but your chances are still immensely slim. The best weapon in this situation is flight or barricading/hiding. I have repelled unarmed muggings before once I deduced what the situation was and that was scary, but this is an entirely differrent situation. Use of force or negotiation would be wasted on an individual like that as they are seeking a final goal no matter what. Not too different to our friend Crass.

Asking the gunman nicely to stop has always worked well... as long as you are inside one of these:

Tsk, tsk. Then our cops are going to start whining that they're outgunned and demand some more toys. And then when they roll into an incident 1 hour late in one of these we're going to complain and decide we need self-protection with one of these each. And they we're going to complain about the price of gas to run these and we'll need to use these to secure cheap oil. And then ...

I know. Blow-back or unintended consequences. But that's just one slippery slope which seems to be a valid argument for the anti-gun control set.

Hey - at least I don't talk about going on a psychotic killing spree with a .22 and "hollowed out bullets". I'll bet addict uses his bow to shoot arrows strapped with dynamite, too.
