Relative to the size of campus, pretty far apart. It is a solid 10-15 minute walk to get from AJ to Norris.

For those of you who can't get the news, here is the official statement by the president of VT:

Shooting at Virginia Tech / Statement by President Charles W. Steger

The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions. There were two shootings on campus. In each case, there were fatalities. The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus. I want to extend my deepest, sincerest and most profound sympathies to the families of these victims which include students There are 22 confirmed deaths.

We currently are in the process of notifying families of victims. The Virginia Tech Police are being assisted by numerous other jurisdictions. Crime scenes are being investigated by the FBI, University Police, and State Police. We continue to work to identify the victims impacted by this tragedy. I cannot begin to covey my own personal sense of loss over this senselessness of such an incomprehensible and heinous act The university will immediately set up counseling centers. So far centers have been identified in Ambler Johnson and the Cook Counseling Center to work with our campus community and families.

Here are some of the facts we know:

At about 7:15 a.m. this morning a 911 call came to the University Police Department concerning an event in West Amber Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded. Victims have been transported to various hospitals in the immediate area in the region to receive emergency treatment.

We will proceed to contact the families of victims as identities are available.

All classes are cancelled and the university is closed for the remainder for the today. The university will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. but classes will be cancelled on Tuesday. The police are currently staging the release of people from campus buildings.

Families wishing to reunite with the students are suggested to meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech. We are making plans for a convocation tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon at Cassell Coliseum for the university community to come together to begin to deal with the tragedy.

"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again."

I think they locked down the one dorm first. The second shooting is quite a ways on the other side of campus, must not have been locked down.

Lots of rumors flying about between the news, my friends, etc.

One of them is that the guy was looking for his girlfriend (hence his presence in West AJ dorm) then went to Norris looking for her. The killings were possibly committed execution style....fucking horrible.

Take this all with a grain of salt, information/rumors are flying around Blacksburg right now, its nuts here. I have friends on the BBurg rescue squad and they have called everyone out. Jeebus...

Norris is Mining and Minerals Engineering and Engineering Science and Mechanics

Edit: They also have classes for other engineering disciplines there, but those are the main ones. I've had a couple classes in there and I am an Aerospace/Ocean Engineering major, so its hard to say what class it was.

a quick search also revealed that Norris has the offices to many of the schools Deans and upper admin type people.

Almost positive it was just one shooter, he is dead. Fox is reporting he had a vest full of clips and was walking down the hall, unloading on classrooms. They did apprehend one person outside Norris, but whether or not he was involved is unknown. The search for a second shooter is part of police procedure, but they are reporting campus is secure now.

As far as lifting the lock-down....When I was in school we had a similar shooting acrossed campus and they didn't lock down the entire campus. (I think it was 5 dead). U of Arizona college of Nursing.

Official reporting to pete willaims- cheif justice correspondent for NBC will not comment on a motive but confirm the shooter took his own life.

edit- shot student indicates the shooter was Asian and wearing a maroon hat. Shooter came into the students room, started firing randomly at everybody in the room then left. The injured try to barricade the door to keep him from coming back in. Gunman came back to the door and started firing through the door when he couldn't get in.

Most of the deaths were at the class building and not the dorm.

Reports are that he had automatic large clip handguns.
Firearms expert on NBC suspects they were either modified or illegal but isn't ruling out the simple fact that two handguns of 16 shots a clip is a lot of firepower when there is time to re-load.
