I guess the snack was a stretch as I never end up eating while running but listen mister it's dry as a bone here and I like a little water ok

then the spray I must have. it's important here + I recently read "A beast in the garden" about mtn lion attacks around the boulder region - **and I have on occasion seen them with my naked eye from my house** so I even consider now carrying a river knife too.
I know I'm not much of comp to a lion but last ditch attempt I am going to fight for my MF life - they seem to prefer young-mid ages kids and ladies. apparently we are scrumptious

I know different strokes for different folks but I really dig the vest -I've even just been keeping the sternum strap undone the past couple days and continuing to run with it and I dig

Overall a good review of folk's preferences and various options with their pro's and cons so I think a worthwhile conversation

Well, if that's such a concern, then after finding a vest you really like, mount a picture of a fearsome-looking face on it, facing backwards. Apparently, it confuses the cats, who prefer to attack prey from behind. I dunno.

totally- it's kind of a joke but I think there is some real sense in that in how they attack.

Very cool. How many ultra finishes does that bring you to now, Steve?

Got out 5/7 days last week. Nothing more than 5 mikes but feels good to have that consistency back. Thinking another fall marathon, though NYC is a hassle with the fundraising (though that feels good too).

Any recommendations on and east coast (maybe trail) race?

JFK 50 Mile in November is the big show in the east. It's a very fun event, good course, not difficult as trail ultras go. Roughly half of it is on flat canal towpath.

    Wtf!

I'm trying to wrap my head around this one. So, that's how many years of running those? And that's at least 5hrs a race, right?

    I ran 3 miles yesterday...it was epic.

No huge feat really once you're trained to burn body fat and are not prone to injuries: walk the uphills, jog the flats, run the downhills, stay hydrated and fed, don't cook your legs on the downhills in the first half of the race. Trail ultras are easier on most bodies than road marathons because the varied terrain and surface corresponds to less repetitive motion injuries.

22 years. First ultra was a 43+ mile course on Kodiak Island in 1994. All but one were >5 hours. Trail ultra pace is significantly slower than marathon pace, very much so for hilly and/or rough trail courses (which describe most PNW ultras). My ultras (mostly 50Ks) have averaged >5,000' verts. My PR of 4:52 came on a relatively flat course, although it would be considered a relatively slow course per road marathon standards.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

That's incredibly impressive durability of averaging 4/yr over 22 years.

I used to run a fair amount, but knees are not so happy any more. Of course I was a heel striker and have switched to forefoot striker now. Still, my years skiing took its toll, so I bike primarily. I do miss running, so I'll only go out and do 3-5 these days. I've never done a marathon, although I was training for Boston (just going to poach it) and my dad became sick with cancer and my focus changed. Never made it back to train for it again due to other life stuff.

Finally starting to get some real miles in and a little speed back. Did 25 miles so far this week and finally got under 8:30/mile pace. Not great but better then I've been able to do for awhile. Mammoth 1/2 is next month.

Props to Steve, I can't imagine anywhere near those miles.

Been trying to ramp my mileage up lately too. I've been a lazy fuck all winter so now I'm paying for it with super slow miles. That said, I sure do love going out for a run on a nice sunny morning. Slow or not it's just so damned good to be out there bounding along down the trail with the bird chirping and the flowers blooming.

Don't worry about it. You should become used to running in all sorts of conditions. Ya never know what race day brings.
