He might pull it off. On a 2:00:10 pace with 2 miles left
Damn. 2:00.24
4:36/mile pace
whacky
Missed it by thaaaat much. Although, fast and impressive I don't think those orchestrated conditions should really count for any kind of record

anyone have recs for a good running pack/ vest?
picked up a camelbak "octane" at the local used gear store to give it a whirl since I have been running longer distances (previously I'd run no further than 3- 4 miles just to get the exercise)
It has the hydration low on the lumbar zone which I liked and I also liked the little side pocket wings for easy access- but it rubbed my neck raw- couldn't figure out a way to position it where it wouldn't make neck contact so thinking maybe a ladies specific version might be worth chking out since our shoulders are generally less broad and it might sit more on my shoulders
read some reviews but there are soo many options out there so thought I'd see what you all were using
Thanks!

Try a waist pack. Two 20 oz bottles go a long way. Need more, use hand-helds (hand jobs!).

Not a bad idea but waist packs dont work as well for ladies i guess bc of our more hourglassy shapes. Can't get them to sit without riding up
And that's way more water than i'd ever need. More about the ability to carry items and a bit of water to wet the whistle.
Looking for vest options ideally

A friend of mine that does a lot of trail running uses the Nathan Vapor Howe. It's a vest with a 1.8L bladder for hydration and has capacity for other stuff, but it's not bulky. There's a lot of similar products our there too for less. I like the Nathan vest she was using when we ran the Spitfire 12K. More like she ran it, I jogged/hiked it, LOL! I've been looking at them too since I am trying to do longer distances this summer and maybe do a 25K in August up at Harriman State Park.
My first suggestion would be to drink a big glass before you go, then you don't need to carry any. I generally don't take anything for rides or runs under 2 hours. People think I'm weird, though. Otherwise I like handhelds. Minimal, pockets for snacks, and decent fall protection. I went down hard during a long run a couple years ago. Landed so hard I blew the top off my HH. I was stoked to be uninjured, but pissed because it contained the last of my water.
If you're set on a vest, I ended up with the UltrAspire Alpha 2.0. I like it because it's pretty minimal, and because you can put bottles in the front pockets, or a bladder in the pack, or both. I only wore it on the longest runs, though. I hate vests almost as much as I hate hydration packs when mountain biking.
Hey Viva - and any other Western States folks. My buddy John is racing this year. I imagine he'll be with AJW. If you see him, wish him luck, then heckle at will.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
It will be curious to see what happens with the snow pack. There have been only two real snow years during Western, and I ran one of them in 95. 20+ miles of deeeeep snow (we're talking post-holing up to your knees at times), and then 100+ degree temps the rest of the day. Fucking brutal!
Dunno if I'll make it this year. Have to work SD 100 earlier in June, but I'll certainly look out for your buddy if I do make it. I work Red Star Ridge aid station, maybe we can do a gag drop bag for him.

I use a Salomon Skin Pro 10. I tried on a bunch around that size (wanted enough space to carry a warm/rain layer, headlamp, microspikes, dog leash, food plus a bladder) and it seemed like it would bounce around the least. But I'm pretty sure you're shaped differently than me.
thanks for the suggestions gang
I used a belt for a bit - this wee model and I liked it but yea- something about my shape that had it constantly high up on my waist which then pulled my shirt up- found myself almost eating the dust a couple times bc I was always messing with it.

so I thought a vest would be sweet and I liked the utility of that one I got aside from the neck burns
I guess what I want to carry is a teeny bit of water, a small bear spray or I also have an even smaller people mace that I often take, a light jkt or layer, a miniature snack and TP (I still can't go over the 5mile mark without needing to sh*t my pants - also side note -does this ever get better??)
so I don't need anything big but having the mace is pretty key these days as the lions and bears are still down low and we are seeing them frequently.
Going to do some shopping now and chk out all the suggestions. and dammit I thought running was a somewhat simple, gear-whoreless sport but here I am having a belt, but wanting a vest. I also do have one of those nathan handhelds that I won a couple yrs ago so I should maybe give that more of a chance given that it has a decent size pocket on the bottle holder.

Running makes you poop?

On the water topic, hand held bottles work great. I don't carry water if out for less than two hours unless I'm dumb enough to head out midday in the middle of summer. Maybe a water bottle in one hand and some bear spray in the other? You could use one of the hand held holsters from a water bottle. might be able to stuff a really light wind shirt into one of the pouches on the hand held. I don't eat unless I'm out for 3-4 hours on foot, bike or skis. I don't have any helpful insight into the pooping problem. Maybe change your diet/schedule so you poop first thing in the morning? I almost always poop within an hour of getting up, coffee helps.
Yea the one way i figured out to avoid it is to go out and do my longer run first thing in the am before i eat breakfast etc. definitely have tried every various eating/running/pooping times but hoping I just get more used to being all shaken up and it stops.
But otherwise i guess i am a bear..... waiting for it...

I like these waist packs; only ones that don't move on me.

Or a simple Spi-belt for phone and mace, and just slam water before heading out.
I see all sorts of water carrying devices in ultras: handhelds, vests, hydration packs, belts. Most elite runners use 1 or 2 handhelds because on most ultra courses they hit an aid station every 45 minutes and refilling a handheld is fast. Lots of experienced women ultrarunners wear vests.

I hate handhelds unless I'm just shuffling along at a recovery pace. Even then I don't like them. After hundreds of runs with a bottle, I still find having even a little weight in my hand annoying. I still use one from time to time when it's convenient.
I tried one belt. It moved around on me. Unbearable. Wanted to throw it off a cliff. And I often run with a dog leash wrapped around my waist with a carabiner and a little hitch. Doesn't work with a belt. Not really interested in trying again.
I don't notice the vest much at all. It can be a little warm. No chaffing even after 5+ hours.
I like the Nathan speeddraw handheld for shorter runs, something about the way the handstrap is placed makes it easy to carry so you are not gripping the bottle. It has a little zippered compartment that will fit a few small items. Now that the dog has figured out that what I am carrying has water in it, she hits it with her nose whenever she wants water, so I've resorted to carrying the larger version.
carrying a nalgene in hand (its a PIA) , phone in pocket, trying to figure out where to put bear spray as I know "notorious B.I.G." (nickname) is out in about in my zone...this bear is huDge and fast and i want my big bear spray , carried a knife today, don't like belts for running, vest may be too pro look for me
thinking about sewing something for across the chest like a bandolier, water, bear spray, etc, all right in front and easy
