spent the winter on the dreadmill which paid off in spades this week... two six-plus mile runs outside in the sunshine! Couple shorter ones too -- feels soooooo good to be going into the season not starting from square one.

Being unemployed does have its benefits.

I'm so slow right now I did not really run all winter and I drank a lot (stupid attorney's and their drinking shenanigans). So this is the weakest I have ever felt going into spring my weights the same but my body fat has gone from 11% in the fall to yesterday 18%. And this is my year to run the VT100.

Whats everyone's goals for this season?
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

To be able to be healthy. Trying acupuncture for nagging Turf Toe and Shin Splints. No race goals, but running 3-5 miles 4-5x per week is on the list by mid June.

basically starting from square one here. I cannot do dreadmills more than twice a week, and as stated above, too much drinking with the shareholders @ the firm.

I started crossfit the other day, and I would like to work that into my running adventures.

As for goals: just get out as much as possible and have fun. Running has lost many aspects of the enjoyment I once got out of it. That also includes races, but there are some times and distances I'd like to hit.

Hesitate to even remark about a half-marathon goal after what Steve's been doing... But I'd like to do better on my time this year...

I have some issues with the top of my IT band basically my right ass check or way under it. So my Chiropractor has been taping me with this kenniso tape and I can't believe how good it works.

This is a link to a runner world video on applying kenniso tape to help shin splints it might be worth tiring.

I'll give it a shot. I've been dealing with these shin splints for ~18 months on and off. During ultimate season I usually wear one of those calf compression sleeves, which helps, but I'd like to be able to go out and run without it, hence the acupuncture, ultrasound, PT, flexibility training, etc that I've done (and continue to do) over the winter.

Want to figure out how to find time to train for another marathon w/out widowing the wife and orphaning the kids.

Want this marathon to be someplace cool and an excuse to travel, so need to find the $ to make that happen too.

Valleygirl, thanks for bumping this thread! I was wondering how everyone's running was going.

Why is it your last year? Is this the last year period? Or did you do some lottery thing that expires? Just a personal goal? I'm confused.

Tuck- what other races are you thinking about this season?

Quote Originally Posted by Tuckerman View Post

    April- Big Sur marathon
    May- Quicksilver 50k
May- Ohlone Wilderness 50k (if I get in, currently on the waiting list!)
    June/July- major mileage ramp up
    August- Headlands 50 miler
then MAYBE if timing works out and my parents will be at their OBX house in October (currently up in the air), I'm thinking of joining some Blazeman Warriors for the lighthouse to lighthouse 85 miler in north carolina for ALS awareness.

I'd guess my overall goal right now is just to get better at doing trails and hills. I had NO CONCEPT of "trails" or "hills" before moving to the west coast. Bridal trail in central park does not equal trail running, and Harlem Hill is NOT a hill! So different out here... we just didn't have access to this kind of terrain in nYC.

So far I'm about at 40 miles a week and feeling really, really good. Proud of myself for all the work I've been doing, and for the first time in years I have been truly consistent about getting out there every day. A fun project I'm trying on some of my weekday shorter runs is to run every single hill, staircase, and park in San Francisco. I made a list of all of them here, here, and here. The reasoning behind this is threefold- 1.) makes me learn the city really well on foot 2.) gets in some hills and stairs! 3.) interesting, i like doing new routes. Should be updating the blog as I check them off.

Other stuff I'm really looking forward to is volunteering at some of the crazier ultras out here- Viva is letting me tag along and do an aid station with him at Western States, and I'm currently lobbying some friends to go make the trip to volunteer at Badwater.

Final goal is to kind of ingratiate myself in to the ultra scene out here and make some friends while doing it. It's CRAZY not only how nice these people are out here, but how they all seem to know each other!! It's like a big ultrarunning degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Nic- I'm probably adding crossfit next month as a 3x a week strength training. How often do you think you'll be doing it? Is there a gym near you, or will you be doing it on your own?

How about Paris? Supposed to be a very lovely race. Check out marathonguide.com for a great reference of many, many races. Another one that's on my dream list is Mayor's Midnight Sun race in AK.

Excuse me... what am I?? Chopped liver??? What about big sur, hmm? Or does that not even register on your radar as a "big thing" because you are so bad ass now that a marathon is just a mere training run? I, for one, and very psyched for Big Sur.

BDFA... 40 miles a week?? Holy crapola, girlfriend... can you share what your schedule is? I'll admit I've been feeling good about my 15-20... but not really in training mode for anything yet...

You guys all make me wanna do an ultra... but damn... that's just gonna hurt...

Not overhydrate and get cramps and seize up again so I can stay on track to break 3:30 like I planned on last year.
A sprint triathlon or two and maybe a full olympic distance triathlon.

I ran 2x/wk over the winter on the ellipitcal about 5-6mi and am still in shape to do 7-10 outside at or under 8min/mi pace right now.
I've been swimming once a week since about mid jan. I started not being able to do a straight 500m and now I'm up to sub 10 500s and did a 1/2mi today for the first time ever at 16.5min so I'm pretty psyched.

Going to do the Milwaukee marathon this year instead of the Chicago. Don't have to travel, like the course and less people means better chance of PR instead of 10mi of jostling and dodging for position.

No I have never ran it so I need my time to be super good so that its difficult for me to beat it in upcoming years. Kinda of lame I know.

Somewhere in here I need to beat my Pemi Loop time from last year. Its not a race its a solo run. The fastest time I have seen is around 8.5 hours I did it last year in 11.5 hours, so that needs to improve a lot.

Official races (no more Jay Challenge ) so far
05/23 Wachusett Mountain Princeton, MA 4.3 Miles
05/24 Pineland Farms, New Gloucester, Maine (I need to work at this race)
05/31 Pack Monadnock Wilton to Temple, NH 10 Miles
06/13 Northfield Mountain Northfield, MA 10.3Km USATF-New England Trail Championships
06/27 There's a Black Fly in My Eye 10 Mile Trail Run (maybe, I did this back to back last year but I want to do well at Cranmore this year. Its the USA & NACAC Mountain Championships)
06/28 Cranmore Hill Climb North Conway, NH 13.5Km (men) 9Km (women) USA & NACAC Mountain Championships
07/04 Local 5 mile road race to support parks and rec. (I always get podium. But last year I was girled that's not happening again)
07/05 Loon Mountain Race Lincoln, NH 5.7 Miles
07/11 Ascutney Mt. Challenge Windsor, VT 3.8 Miles
    07/19-07/19 VT100
    09/27 VT 50

Wow- My goals seem pretty limited after seeing some of the achievements here.
Ms. Hutz and I ran all winter and decided to train for the blues clues 50k in october. We're pretty stoked. Along the way we'll do a 30K trail run and then some trail races in late oct.

We ran all winter long and are very happy to be starting at where we finished last year.

One thing we noticed however....all winter we did our long runs on trail/dirt and now we've gone back to pavement- OUCH. What a difference that makes. Thanks but no thanks...I'm going to stick to trail....

Oh and I want to break 20 minutes at the bar association 5k while wearing a suit and screaming on my blackberry...

I've been running all winter 4x a week. I'm doing a couple tris this summe, a weekly five miler at home, the Falmouth road race, and any other road races I can find. I need to get the mileage up bigtime, though.
