4hrs 1min. I'm disappointed I made such a bonehead move after all the training I did and was healthy and injury free for the most part to set out and break 3.5hrs but nope. Definitely doing another one. Maybe one in 3wks in IN for redemption, depends on how I recover. Might have to wait till the spring.

I agree with Stu. The goal is to perform to your peak potential on a given day. If you lock up and seize up - well that's your potential that day. It happens. Think about it this way- if you hadn't put all the work in then you wouldn't have been able to fight through the cramping.
    Good job.

I have nothing to add, except to say hi! I ran chicago too. what a cool race. figuratively.

I didn't race it, i paced a friend who was running his first marathon. so the time.. not relevant.

i drove home (to nyc) last night and now i'm at work. i slept 3 hours on i-80 in PA. why does driving through PA always suck?

Sorry to hear you didn't crank it as well as you had hoped... but still a FKNA accomplishment. Don't forget that part!!! I'm think you probably needed more "beer carbs" in the couple days before the event?
If some of the best times of my life were skiing the UP in -40 wind chill with nothing but jeans, cotton long johns and a wine flask to keep warm while sleeping in the back of my dad's van... does that make me old school?

Finally, 9 days out. I'm thinking less. Running more. Letting go. thanks guys. Tonight I hopped on a treadmill just to see what's what and laid down a 7.5 min. mile among a couple others. Sweet. I know I've got 13 in me, and that's what counts -- though not at THAT speed.

I'm not gonna lie -- looking forward to a little respite from the 8 mos of training... and the Grill wings & cheeseburger I'm rewarding myself w/after the race. Mouth watering already... am hoping this makes me run faster, just to GET there.

After 3 weeks of laziness post-VT 50 I just did my first training run of the 2009 running season. It was dark the whole time and 30 degrees. I'm really going to have to work on the whole motivation thing to get me through the winter, as it's just going to get colder.

I need to run with ms. montanaskier sometime, she sounds like an animal.

Anybody here do pose/forefoot running? What about Crossfit Endurance instead of logging long miles?

How many push ups/pull ups/squats/etc can you do? We can do more.

Have you or are you suffering from chronic use injuries (plantar fasciatis, IT Syndrome, runners knee, etc)?

How many hours do you train a week? How many hours does your spouse/family wish you trained? (This program only requires 6-8 hours per week to COMPETE at Ultra/Ironman distances).
I ask because I am getting into the regular Crossfit program pretty heavy and keep coming back to the Crossfit Endurance thing...can it really be true?

Maybe this should be a new thread?

I just meant that my 2008 races/goals are passed and now working towards those in 2009. Plus, it's a good excuse to take a few weeks off as I transition.

I searched but didn't see this discussed yet: what are the pros and cons of running backwards? Benefits for skiing?

I've been running every morning for the past three weeks and figured I would add another element to my training. Did about 6-8 minutes today and it felt great, and I could certainly feel more stress on my quads.

Well, it was a gorgeous day on the Front Range. It doesn't seem like the CO folks are well represented in this here thread, but I sure hope they enjoyed the great fall weather. Without further ado, anatomy of a great run:

I spent most of the day outside with friends, being semi-active. Temperatures were high for this time of year so we made the most of it. Got back to my place and decided to go for a run. I haven't been running much recently, due to a bit of a post-race letdown and a left achiles that has been acting up. I took off from my place about 5:30, figuring I would give the achilles a little stretch. I cruised through the first 4 miles with a bit of a breeze blowing around. The wind was not really sure which direction it wanted to go and produced some nice miniature leave cyclones. The temp was hovering around 65 degrees, perfect for a sweat-inducing run in shorts and a t-shirt. My standard quickie-run has a decision point at mile 4 where one must choose to go home (for a 5 mile total) or add a loop around Washington Park for an 8 mile total. I hemmed and hawed as I approached the turn and had the typical moment of clarity where I realized that I would be annoyed with myself if I turned for home. I made the left turn and started on the 3 mile gravel loop. For whatever reason, those 3 miles just clicked. The sun was going down over the lake, producing an ethereal orange light that seemed to cover everything around. The wind kept up its little cyclones. I smiled and laughed at every person I passed or who came in the opposite direction. A few smiled back, a few just thought I was crazy. I was okay with both responses, and floated back to the final turn. As I hit the last thrid of a mile before my house, I slowed for a cool-down. As the endorphins kicked in and I felt the altitude tugging at my lungs, I knew that it had been a good run.

It's almost an hour and a half later now. After a decent meal and a good beer, I have to say, this is why I do it. There are definitely the low days in training, the good races, and of course, the bad races. It's the regular days that somehow turn sublime that defines why I run. I hope that you guys have those days too.

Daywalker -- that's why I do it too. Beer tastes soooo good afterward!

Race day... I have the jitters. It seems to have stopped raining...

    FKNA LOVED IT.

Just got home from the Original Mountain Marathon. The forecast was for gusts up to 110mph and torrential rain..... And it delivered. Fortunately my team mate and I were well equipped, we found all our navigation/check points and got through no dramas. A few were hospitalised with hypothermia and minor injuries. A handful of runners are still unaccounted for (edit, now accounted for) and mountain rescue teams and a helicopter are out scouring the hills. The mid-point campsite was under 2ft of water and logistics were strained, several roads were washed-out and closed to traffic, there were landslides and rivers broke their banks. But that was fine because the whole idea of the event is self-reliance.

The second day was abandoned, for the first time in the events 41 year history.

Good pics & news coverage here

When this vid was shot we were battling along a ridge line at 750m. The road in the vid was then washed out and we spent the night with 600 others in a farmers shed as we couldn't get back .

bumpity bump given this week's warm-up in Philly.

Stoked for the spring trail running season. Everyone keeping up with their training this winter so far? I've made it through countless 6 am freezing cold runs with LionelHutz this winter and I swear its made us stronger runners. After taking a long run on Sunday in the spring-like warmth (and sudden rain storm), we both agreed that we felt more conditioned than ever.

Training in the cold = more endurance? Thats my unscientific opinion.

Also looking forward to my first ultra later in the year - Blues Cruise 50K - here I (and LionelHutz) come!

Good Philly Stoke! I'm running in the Wiss quite often (and biking when the trails are dry). We should get a Mag meetup and do some spring training. This weather is getting me motivated (finally)!

Anyone signed up for this one? The registration fee increases March 1, fyi.

I've never done a full, but think i'm gonna run this one. Thoughts on the course from seasoned runners? I'm not a hardcore short short wearing freak runner, I just like the feeling i get during/after a good run. Just starting to get a bit more serious this week to begin "training."

One more thing: a buddy's bachelor party is the weekend prior to this marathon. Could the effects of all the hookers-n-blow hurt a week later?
