Quick 5.5 miler out on Tiger Mt. near Seattle this morning. Perfect fall weather though I should have taken my microspikes.

Damn, nice work! I ran the Moab full last weekend as well. It was my first marathon (I've done the half a couple years ago). Holy shit, I can’t imagine doing that course without training. It’s pretty brutal, but spectacular. The views of snowy La Sals from high up that big climb were amazing.

I basically started my training from scratch 6 months ago, after not running much last two years. It’s been awesome to get back in shape, and Moab was a great goal to have out there before ski season. I wound up a little slower than I was hoping, but overall happy considering how hard the course is and that it was a first attempt. I definitely learned a lot, from pacing and fueling to what keeps me motivated. After the half in 2019, I couldn't imagine running twice as far, so it feels pretty remarkable to finally get that done. It only took me 24 hours to go from "That was fun/hard, and I'm not sure I'd do that again" to thinking "I wonder how much time I could pull off of that now that I actually know the course". So I'm pretty sure I'll be back for more...

I probably could have saved a good chunk of time not taking pics, but I don’t think I would have enjoyed it going any faster.

My boy's first cross country season was a good time. Ended last week on a snowy day.

For the people doing the nose breathing, what kind of heart rate are you maintaining while doing it?
I’ve tried a few times, but it feels like my baseline exercise heart rate is too high to allow me to breath just thru my nose.

    Running, Anyone...?

Not a typical tgr mountain pic but have spent the last 2 months in nyc. 1st pic was from a long run up the west side highway path, 2nd pic was from Central Park. Seattle marathon in 11 days!

Well, that is perfect example of you probably going to hard at ‘baseline’

Try this, go slow enough on flat terrain so you can comfortably nose breathing. Don’t judge speed otherwise and just stay with it . Over 10-15 minutes you should slowly be able to pick up pace and then it will be obvious when you can’t nose breath anymore then back back off until you can.

Just play with it over multiple runs and I found I could do it more and more until it became preferable .

Now I can cruise at z 3.5 pretty easy and did 15min at z4 (on flattish downhill) the other day but it took 6 months building to it .

I've been a slow and steady runner for a bunch of years anyway so the nose breathing thing was pretty easy for me to adopt. The mindfulness aspect has been appealing since I usually run without headphones. I'm probably going slower than I was when I was ebreathing thru my mouth but I'll never know since I stopped tracking my runs. No idea how many days I got out last month, what my pace was, my heart rate, my splits. Run, Forest, run...

I've been taking advantage of the beautiful weather we've been having here in Seattle. Trying to maximize it with the rain coming back next week. Inversion today and was 15* warmer at the summit than the base. Tiger Mt. trails are in prime condition right now.

Wow looks like they did some serious logging at Tiger. How's that affected the trails?

I can hold well into Z3/Z4 now, but it took long time to build up to that. Even at easier paces I have to open my mouth on descents, can't seem to relax properly for DH running or riding with my mouth closed.

Yeah, they cut a ton off the top. Downside is it looks terrible. The trails came out of it fine. We'll see how they keep holding up as winter hits. The benefit is that you now have expansive views from Tiger 3 all the way to Tiger 1. I'll take that trade!

That is nice to gain some views. From what I remember it was too dense to see anything until you got to the top. "oh woah there's rainier"

Yep. Really couldn't see anything, especially on Tiger 3. Now you get the Cascades to the east as well as Rainier. You can even see Baker up north if it's clear.

Get the Uphill Athlete training plan or buy their book. Stick to their plan (no improvising or pretending you know more than they do--you don't.)
In 3 weeks you'll be a different athlete.

    Great to hear.
I actually bought this book a couple weeks ago. Now I need to crack it open.

Carpathian/Dan: sounds a little like I just need to keep at it. As for my baseline HR, I watched closely on my last run which starts on a downhill, I begin slow as shit and it still immediately goes up to 120ish. It levels out and I can maintain a reasonable #, but still too high to only use my nose.

Definitely try to keep at it. Do you spend any time on a trainer or spin bike? Indoor cycling allows you to really fine tune intensity. That said, it's also possible that your personal anatomy may be problematic. A deviated septum, a sinus cavity that's smaller than average, etc. will limit the air volume you can move through your nose.

Or just old, fat, and out of shape.

Went much slower tonight and kept trying. Was able to hold on for about a min multiple times.

Running is also something I picked up in my 30’s…..endurance sports don’t come naturally to me. I do recover relatively quickly, so I’ve got that going for me.

Got a 12 hour trail race Saturday. Feel good about my training since July but just recovering from a cold. Shitty timing but I’m gonna give it a go.
