Thanks! There’s a horrible 3 mile scree field before the final downhill. Ugh. The nice thing it’s not too far from my house, so I can get training/previews runs in before the race. Lol! I’ll probably be last, but I should be able to finish. I’m usually one of the last, which I don’t mind because I end up having the trail to myself.
I need new trail shoes. Anyone tried the Topo Athletic Runventure 2? In general I'm looking for something with zero or near-zero drop, wide forefoot, stout rock plate and moderate cushioning.
Before anyone says Altra, I've LP2s and LP3s and both fell apart and sucked on sidehills, so I think I'm done with Altra.
please give feedback on the topo's. i'm trying to get a pair of joe nimble shoes that fit. the ones that i ordered were too small. it's a 2-3 week time from ordering to receipt because the shoes are in germany and apparently, they are using storks to deliver across the pond. the half size too small joe nimbles looked nice and well made. apparently, they have a 3 year warranty. if vivobarefoot had that kind of warranty, i would have new shoes ever 1.5 years because their uppers have always started to fall apart at that time.
a friend just starting running on some skoda trail shoes. i think he's only used them on pine/duff trails. he sounded happy.
I also hate Altras. You might try Hoka Torrents (they aren't like other Hokas at all- wider toe box, normal amount of cushion), Saucony Peregrines (durability is so-so), and Saucony Xodus (Durable and stable, but a little heavy). Not Zero drop though (There all 4mm-ish), and not as wide as Altras (not much is).
x2 for saucony peregrines. Left altra for them - wide enough but not like an altra, low enough drop but not zero, very aggressive tread much harder sole and they just feel faster
Torrent and Xodus both look pretty promising. All the "running" I do these days is power hiking up rocky 10-20% grade followed by running down similarly steep shit (aka, a Rundown), so weight and a minimal level of drop aren't big concerns. But, REI Outlet had a deal that was too good to pass up on the Runventure 2 (25% off, plus members get another 20% off one item through Nov. 19). REI return policy is still pretty boss so minimal risk. If I end up returning them I'll give the Torrent or Xodus a shot.
I found the Torrent too narrow in the forefoot. Back to the Cascadia for me.
Have you tried these?

I know they're at least kind enough to warranty my kids shoes after he got them stuck in his chain on his bike. I told them what happened they sent me a new pair as soon as I had mailed his. They didn't wait for them to get to their place.
That's rad that they warranted those shoes. I tried two different sizes of the xeroshoes. The last didn't work for my foot, too narrow at the forefoot and my 4th and 5th toes were hitting/rubbing the shoe. That experience resulted in me paying return shipping and having no product.

Meh, just work yourself up to the low twenty mile range and then work in a couple of hard runs a week ( "hard" as in slay that motherfucker!).
Enjoy the journey!

I keep having good results with Nike for pavement shoes at least. They fit my foot well and hold up to a beating with out any premature things falling apart. And you can get them for cheap ($60 range) at local department store.
I went in to specialty running shoe place this summer and was blown away by the prices !
I have splurged a couple times on Salomon x cross or whatever they're called for mountain running ($120). Gone through 2 pairs now , they do start getting thread bare around widest part of forefoot. Maybe they too narrow in first place?
I took this last week off completely for 7 days! First break in exactly a year since when I took a month off last October.
Felt weird to not be all fatigued and hobbled at work all week. Got back on the horse again today.
Feeling fresh and invigorated despite the shitty weather. Learning to love the indoor bike trainer / treadmill combo...
I got out for an hour and a half yesterday of slow cruising along the highline in the snow. Kids were like, dad why are you going out in this weather. Had to explain to them that weather like this (like 25* with 2-4" falling) was the best time to go. I love soaking up the morning sun on a mid summer day as much as the next guy but give me a chilly snowy morning and you can bet I'll be chomping at the bit to go play in it.
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.
Carp, if you like the Salomon speedcross, maybe try the wide version? I had this same problem in the womens. Discovered they made them in wide and tried those. I did have to size down a half a size, but this pair has lasted without tearing on the sides at the forefoot.
I ran all of my ultras ( from 50K-50miles-12 hours-100miles) in street shoes. Hell, last time I ran We$tern $tates, I wore racing flats. The right fit is paramount. Trail-specific outsoles may garner you an advantage in mud or certain races, but street shoes will work as well at most events.

Does anyone have experience with Salomon Speedcross trail runners in the snow? Do they have good traction?
