I taught him now he's better than me.

This last summer my brother wanted to get into kayaking after seeing me for a few years. I am by no means awesome but I can get around and am working on some cartwheels etc. So I taught him his roll last summer...he now has an off side roll that's about 95%. last Sat. he grabbed my girlfriend's necky jive and on his first run of the season blasts the S.F. Payette. Battle rolls every rapid at least 3 times and goes into all the big holes only to roll out later. He found himself headed into seamore's and I saw that necky straight in the air 3/4 out of the water...he pulled it off. Also circulated in Go Left for about 30 secs. only to casually roll out later.

Ever teach anyone and have them kick your ass later?

Sounds like he has a good roll. Other than that, sounds like he is running into lots of stuff that he doesn't want to be hitting.

Sounds like he has a great roll...but still has lots to work on. Taking a lesson, or getting some friends to give him some pointers on river running could be good for him.
Great that you got another person into kayaking.

ridingshockgun; I won't say I taught him, but I took him on his first paddling trips. Started off in a ducky on the Nantahala last June, by July he was back with kayak. I remember having to catch his stuff after the first rapid he hit. Then they opened the Whitewater Center in Charlotte and he started spending 3-4 nights a week there. Now he's A LOT better than I am. Just saw some pictures of him tearing up Hell Hole on the Ocoee last weekend, but I'll let him post those up.

I just need to show him some lines to take and how to move laterally in the river...after that I think it's lights out. I hope he'll let me paddle with him in a year.

Yeah, didn't teach, but started paddling with a guy who ended up a top expeditionary kayaker, including this trip in Nepal. http://classic.mountainzone.com/adve...e/langu-khola/

I'm still gripped when it starts hitting Class IV and on some III's
