would a ratio of 32teeth in the front to 20teeth in the rear on a 29er be harder to pedel arond than the same ration on a 26er.
32 to 20 seems pretty weak.
What is everyone rocking for ratios?
34-16 here

I don't hunt because the word hunting infers the probability of failure. JOhNGchrist goes killing.
heck no on a 26"

That's still pretty burly, running bigger than 2x1.
The one I just bought came with a 34-16. I don't think it's going to stay that way for too long unless I find something nearly flat to ride it on... or I feel like torturing myself. I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I test it out.
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "Wow, what a Ride!"
i personally ran 32-19 on my old 26" single. perfect for the techy and steeper climbs around here. i am now a big fan of the 1x8: 39 x 12-30
more speed up, more speed down, and still super simple and headache free with a nice thumbie set up friction.
I find myself still walking sometimes but the more rides the better

Besides the comet that killed the dinosaurs nothing has destroyed a species faster than entitled white people.-ajp
Heh, yeah. I rode it around the neighborhood and over to Blockbuster last night and while it's SWEET when relatively flat/slightly uphill, I started wondering where I can buy parts to change the gearing in the morning... I guess it won't kill me to walk up some hills for a while though until I find something. And I did buy it for the trails with the mellower climbs in mind.

Word. I think that will eventually prove to be really tall gearing. If you end up doing any substanstial climbing with it, swapping to a 32T will help considerably, IMHO.
And that way too on the downhills, you can focus on carrying momentum versus just pushing a bigger gear.
Your bike is super hot, but having just converted to a lower set of gears 1 x 9, I found a big long, DH riser bar helps with leverage too when you are out of the saddle and climbing or mashing the gear. Or gasp, I could send you out my Mary bar that I don't use and see if you like it. I didn't because it is kind of a fad, but many SSers swear by them.

altagirl,
I have a few slightly used (and even one unused) ACS freewheels in different sizes, so if you decide you want something else for the rear send me a PM. I won't be using them, they're all products of experiments to find my ratio. I'm pretty sure I have an 18t and if you don't do any sustained climbs 32x18 can work okay even in the Rockies if you're strong.
I run 32-18 on 26" and feel its pretty perfect.
32-18
would prolly run a 20 if i were doing alot of hilly techie shit.
i have an 18t if you need one.
