    Need Beacons

i know this thread belongs in gear swap or slide zone but i'm looking for maximum viz.

i have a buddy who is a patroller at las lenas and he and i are starting an avalanche school in argentina this summer where avy education is desperately needed for the fledgling backcountry community. some would say that the professional snow safety community in argentina is also in need of this education and we will be addressing that too.

the problem is that beacons are extremely difficult to come by in argentina and if one can be found you can count on a price that is well out of range of the typical argentine. that's where the maggots come in.

if anyone has old beacons (F1, Pieps 457, etc.) they are willing to donate or sell at a reasonable price i am trying to collect a half dozen or so that we will use during this course. after our courses are complete we will then either donate or sell (at cost) these beacons to the students.

probes are also needed but that is currently a lower priority.

please pm me if you can help and thanks to all. pray for snow...

Sounds like a great idea! I may have an old Pieps that I can donate . . . I'll see if I can dig it up (out of Dad's garage).

You should talk to some of the beacon companies, as it seems like it would be great PR and would introduce their product in a fledgling market. Plus, you'd be recommending it to those who could afford them.

BCA would be great...especially if you're looking for such a small number and for instruction purposes (really easy to use).

    Edit: Doesn't hurt to try...

word. i'll approach BCA if this program grows but right now i'm really looking for beacons i can give away or sell at rock bottom prices to those in need. $100 is a pretty penny for your average AR maggot and i don't think BCA can do that...but like you said...nothing ventured, nothing gained...are you listening bruce?

Wow, that is great news to start an avalanche program in the big Andes! Definetly no shortage of slide paths and big producers in and around Las Leñas! Good work Covert!

I have an Ortovox F2, but I wouldn't want it to be given or sold to someone to actually USE in the field...it would be perfect for a 'outgoing signal only' training tool.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could de-activate the 'search' mode, so it could ONLY be used for that.
    I'm gonna do some research!

    Nice, simple solution!
But knowing crafty south americans, I would think that full disabling would be a 'safer' solution...man, Peruvians can make ANYTHING work again.
Either way, It's yours if ya' want it.
It was a Snow King 'troller unit, so it has history!

For the old F2 transceivers, just remove the earphone, and there is no way to get the transceiver to go on to receive (unless someone, found an old earpnone to use).

    rideit,
If he can't use your beacon, I would love to take it off your hands for training purposes in exchange for some $$ or something else.
