I'll say it one last time- for that amount of money, you will not find a new bike that will satisfy you for more than a few trail rides. In the used market, however, you can find a TON more and get two to three times the quality and parts spec for your money. Disc brakes are a no brainer in New England.

Search "what bike should I buy" threads and you'll see this adviced offered countless times.

Edit: Sorry for the Hijack NateDogg. I will be able to meet up for rides in about a month or so when I finally have a car and a place to store my bikes (praise the lord!). Then I'll be psyched for some weekday Fellsin' and Lynn, 'Nam or Highland on the weekends throughout the summer. Word word.

biggins, I'll look more seriously into a used bike too. Makes sense. Some more research will give me a better idea what things are worth (lack of experience = could easily get screwed)

Hijack was pretty much my fault :P so I'll apologize for that and thank everyone for your advice; I'll post when I've found something that suits me.

Perry, are you the guy who sold Andy the Tracer?

<edit> Simplicity and Rightcoast--what ever happened to riding? Lets get together.

Anyone else--I just got a new mountain-biking housemate in Newton, so we've been riding the smooooove stuff out at Cutler Park after work... If anyone in the area is interested, [Bob] come on down! [/Bob]

I'll be over in the boston area next week for some training and I'm planning on bringing my bike with me. Any one want to show me around?

I'm hoping to hit up Nam, Bill & Teds and anything else worth checking out. I'm up for anything from XC to easy FR/DH stuff.

Hit me up when youre in town. I work in Milford (where Nam is), and live in Newton just down the road from some faaaaast smoooooov buff singletrack at Cutler Park in Needham. Short, but fun as hell.

Not sure when your training is or when you get out, but Nam is a good 35-45 mins outside of Boston with no traffic. 1-2 hours during rush hour.

I 2nd the shout out for JRA cycles. Good guys.

The Fells has some good stuff. Lynn Woods is well worth the drive for you southern folks. Foxboro has some very good stuff. Harold Parker SF up north has some excellent trail, as does the other park that can be hooked up with HP for longer rides (the name of the other one escapes me)

www.ragemtb.com huge e-mail list and local forum. pretty boston area specific. huge number of riders. small core out of the overall number are the serious/core riding folks.

    Nate-

Were you at Cutler on Monday night? I'm usually the only one around when I'm over there after work, but I happened to see TWO other people. Weird.
So I got that goin' for me...which is nice.

Hmmmm, Monday? Dont think so. I think I was out there Tuesday, though. I would have been with my housemate--he has a blue Kona Stinky and I have a white SantaCruz VP Free.

I see people over there every so often... do you ride there often? We should hook up--I ride there quite a bit cuz I live just over the river in Newton Upper Falls.

Sounds good. I'm guessing the training will be 9-5'ish but I'll know more monday.

I might try and hit Nam tomorrow evening.

Let me know! I am free to ride pretty much every day after work. 4 o clock ish.
I am working in Hopedale now, so I can get to Nam easily. There are some decent trails out near me too. More XC ish stuff, but still pretty fun. my riding might suck, i am dealing with a pretty brutal sprained thumb, but I would still love to get togather, as i have been riding solo all summer.

Let me know if you go next week. I go over there when I get the chance, but not until around 6:30 or 7pm. I have a silver/black Fisher HKEK. I'll try to keep up with you guys, but I make no promises.

B & T's was excellent today. I wish I had a bigger bike and bigger balls but I had alot of fun. Made it up on top of the big rock just in time for sunset.

Natedogg, I'll PM you tomorrow once I know when I'm going to get out. I'm staying up in Chelmsford. Buff singletrack sounds really fun too.

Does anyone on here go on the Lynn Woods group ride on Tuesday nights? I'm thinking I might try and hit that up.

Anyone up for something this week? Thumb is healing pretty well, at least good enough for a mellow ride.

I just sent Natedogg a PM. I'm planning to ride tomorrow and Weds. Not really sure where yet. One of those days I really want to get to Nam but the other day I'm flexible. I'm in Chelmsford and should be ready to head out around 4:30 each day.

Dude, WTF. My email notifications for this thread apparently dont work...

    Anyhoo, Dfinn: PM replied.

Everyone else interested: I'm planning on riding Cutler Park (Needham) tonight whenever I get home from work ('tween 5:00 and 7:00 I hope). Fast and smooth, but I'm wicked out of shape, so keeping up with me won't be an issue.

Also planning a Nam ride tomorrow (Wednesday) with my housemate and a guy from work (lurker Anby). Sounds like Dfinn is interested--Rightcoast (ie., the OTHER Dan), are you in?

I'm a giant pussbag when it comes to drops, so no pressure to perform! I'm thinking 5:00 or 5:30 at Lowes on Fortune Blvd in Milford...

Wow, so much riding. I have hardly made it out this season with all the tennis that I am currently playing. Ah, tennis ...

Change of plans... I overlooked the fact that other people wont be able to make it before 6. Anby and I might take a quick ride around 5, and then meet up with dfinn and my housemate around 6.

Heh, Im the opposite. Havent played tennis in over a year, and have probably ridden more in the last 3 weeks than I did during 3 months last summer...

Left you a message, ya shitbum.

Dfinn, thanks for riding... Good times.

I think we are gonna ride Nam tomorrow and bring the camera. Maybe my housemate will crack his skull so I can get some good carnage pics for a TR!

Anyone ever ride Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover? We did a two-hour ride there last night--it was amazing, and I dont think we hit the tip of the iceberg! Awesome landscape, and technical as shit! I think it might top my list of best rides in MA so far...
