    Planet Earth on Discovery HD

Two words: Holy shit. This is the most amazing cinematography I've ever seen. I just watched the "Mountains" and "Ocean Deep" (from last year maybe?) episodes, and my mouth was open in amazement the entire time. If you haven't seen this yet, make sure you tune in next Sunday or find the reruns. On a 50" LCD TV, I couldn't believe my fucking eyes.

They ocean deep had me in amazement for the entire time it was on. Amazing how a whole different world can remain oblivious to a lot of people.

I had my TV tuner program on my computer record all 3 that were on tonight. The mountain one was awesome. I couldn't believe that the snow leopard didn't eat shit while running downhill. Those baboons with the crazy hand strength were awesome as well.

Edit: Watched the water one, those birds that can dive 60 feet for fish are awesome, I had no idea that any species of bird could do that.

I'm sure the quality is great, but it's pretty much destroyed with MPEG-2 encryption and a cheap TV tuner card. I'll watch it on a better screen when I'm home I guess. I can imagine how it looks in HD.

No one looks in that forum.

I can't wait to watch the other two that I haven't seen yet, and all upcoming new episodes. Simply amazing.

It was on HDOnDemand at least on Comcast since last week. If you don't have a 1080p TV, these documentary shows are a reason to get one.

They look great but I'm sure they'll be better on HDDVD/BRD when they aren't compressed like crazy by the cable company. If only I had an HDTV and HDDVD player in Boston, I'd be counting down the days till I could give Amazon my 69.95 on April 24.

Edit: I wonder if Blue Planet or Andes to Amazon will be redone in HD (they were both shot on film so it's theoretically possible)... if you haven't seen Blue Planet it's probably like whatever ocean segment they have in Planet Earth, but as an entire series with even more craziness. Already based on what people have said I think some of the BP footage was reused in PE. Andes to Amazon is great too, but apparently you can't even buy it on DVD yet.

dude, my jaw hit the floor when i saw how fast that snow leopard moved through that BURL terrain.

i don't even think my own cat can move that fast on flat terrain after i scare the shit out of him.

Caught it last night on regular TV and my jaw hit the floor when they showed the great white jumping for the seals. Seen it before but when it's in super slow motion like that... my god.

Watching the african wild dogs coordinate from the air was super cool too.

^^^ Which one was that? I've seen the Mountains episode and part of Ocean Deep, but the only other I've seen listed is the Polar Bear migration.

I have no idea. I was flipping through channels last night and immediately noticed the different look of Planet Earth and ended up watching it until it ended and then I passed out in bed with the lights and TV still on...

Heh, that's the one. Usually when they film it, it all happens so fast that it doesn't really register. Super high-def slow-mo makes it unreal.

And Attenborough is definitely classic. The woman from last night was snooze-city.

I agree. Good news from Amazon's HDDVD page:

"DVD Features: Original U.K. broadcast version narrated by David Attenborough, including 90 minutes not shown on the Discovery Channel"

Seriously! Why they (whoever "they" may be) decide that an american actor/actress would be better a better fit for a British made documentary airing in America is beyond me, especially when they are replacing the voice of THE MAN. David Attenborough's voice is the voice of nature documentaries for me, and to dub over his voice is sacriledge

Thankfully I managed to grab all 11 eps in 1080 off usenet when they originally aired in the UK, so it's all good.

Planet Earth rules. I watched it in a friends room last night with about 15 other kids. Probably the first thing other than sports that made me REALLY wish I had a high-def TV.
