I was that kid, the one you always saw on your street, hitting jumps made of a strip of plywood and a cinderblock on the sidewalk. I wouldn't classify myself as an adrenaline junky, because I don't think I'm really addicted, it just balances me out. I started skiing when I was like 13, and have never been the same since. Skiing became my escape. If I'm really stressed out, and hit the mountain, even just for a few hours, I'm at peace again. It doesn't matter what's going on in my life, or how messed up the world is, while I'm skiing nothing else matters. Like a lot of people on here I do the whole mountain biking thing in the summer to get me through, but it's nothing compared to skiing. Can't really explain WHY I do it, other than to say when I dont I'm not myself.

Take last weekend for example...I was at a bar talking to this girl...a typical salt lake chick with tats and gauged earrings. She asked me why I moved to Utah and I explained I moved here for the skiing and proceeded to explain why and what it means to me. The conversation then proceeded to take a nose dive as I found myself feeling like I was boasting about something that she would never understand. I figured I would shift gears by asking what she was in to, ya know, what she was passionate about. Her answer? Reading. Specifically reading about serial killers. She then asked me if I wanted to buy her a drink. I said no.

The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.
I like to hike.
Snowshoes are slow, ugly, clumsy. Skis are fast, pretty, and graceful. Usually.
Lemme know if you do figure out a way for her to relate or understand.
I've been skiing for 23 years and my wife still shakes her head when I excitedly leave for the slopes.
I am a very lucky man to be able to share this sort of excitement with Mrs Roo.

Yes. You have a good memory. She obviously does not.
She went as much as I did for two seasons but now says she can't for the life of her remember why she liked it in the first place.
Her recollection now is that it was all just to make me happy.
Every year or so I try to convince her to give it another try but she's not interested. It's sad.
What she loses I do my best to try to make up for.....![]()
Skiing sucks.
I'm totally over it since I found the magic of scrapbooking.
Edit: Except for yesterday. Skiing didn't suck yesterday.

Move upside and let the man go through...
If she swam..she has to have a little competitor in her. After 22 years of hockey, I needed something to "improve at" and skiing is the only sport I've ever tried that has no ceiling tied to age. At age 23, I had to accept that I was not going to be a pro hockey player and that for all intensive purposes, I had stopped improving.
I really think I'll get better at skiing every single day for the rest of my life. Unlike the confines of a rink (or court etc..), there is always a steeper chute, deeper pow, more technical section etc..I guess I love the perpetuity of it all.
btw this picture is one of the sickest shots I have seen on this site this year....![]()
If you can find a girl that's into skiing, you are lucky man. I don't take for granted that Mrs. Webb loves it. You're going to be spending time with this girl either way, so you may as well find one you can ski with. You can still go with the boys, you'll just be skiing twice as much.
