To Haines, Alaska around May 21

Hello folks- I will be heading to Haines, AK departing from Kansas City on May 21. I need a rider who is willing to split all transportation costs from their pick-up to drop-off. I'm going to attend a ski mountaineering course and hopefully land a job in the process. Outdoor recreation opportunities include but aren't limited to camping, fly fishing, bouldering/climbing, skiing, and biking. Trip route hasn't been finalized, but I need to be in Haines on the 26 at the latest. Shoot me a PM if interested.

You might want to rethink your travel plans. If your driving up its going to take you 4 full days to get here. If you want to stop and do anything else along the way give yourself more time. I drove from the U.P. of michigan to Alaska, took me 4 days of driving, averaging close to 16 hours on the road each day.

I'd Just drive up here and then once your here hit the local rivers and streams. End of may the first of the Kings should be rolling into the rivers.

I've done the Alcan twice from your location. It takes longer than 4 days unless you drive at least as much as Huk It stated. There may still be some weather in various places due to storms.

Also, I would definitely order the Milepost. It's a great set of maps that is really essential for the drive.

Mile post is a good idea, looking back it would have been nice to have when I did the drive up.

From KC, I would plan on it taking 6 days. Once you get into BC and particularly the Yukon Terr., there are only so many places to sleep, get gas, etc. The road kind of determines your itinerary.

Also, be sure to have your passport. If you have pets then there are certain border considerations also. Firearms are ok with the correct paperwork (available online) but no handguns.

thanks for the info everyone. According to mapquest it's 3000 miles. Is 700-800 miles a day too ambitious for the road quality? What's the Milepost and I'm still looking for a rider if anyone's interested

That mileage is not bad...somedays more somedays less. Again, the road determines your stops unless you camp.

Ordered the Milepost. I might leave the evening of the 20th and get a head start. I will be camping/sleeping in my car, so I can be pretty flexible. Thanks for all the input folks

Ahh...way to dirtbag it. That gives you steeze points for the guide school too. If you show up looking fresh then they will be suspicious.
