That shit reminds me of when I took the wipe out on my snowboard that made me give up racing. Was in a practice session, had a beautiful run through the gates, had completed the race course and was about to pull a hard turn to stop...suddenly, without warning, I caught an edge. I went down at full speed and got knocked out. I remember coming to an seeing my arm at an angle that it should not have been at. I thought I had a compound fracture and that I would have bone sticking through skin and that I was bleeding to death. In my panic stricken state, I tried to get up. No good, I fainted.

My injuries were a nasty concusion and a badly dislocated shoulder. I gave away my racing snowboard the next day. It took years for me to get the guts to go that fast again on a snowboard. I'm pussy like that

Complete randomness. Which brings me to the subject of coffee.

arabica or robusta? Arabica seems to be the 'gourmet' coffee around here, however I have seen some recent studies stating that it has less caffeine than the robusta bean.

Both seem to make a good cup of joe. It would seem that the freshness of the grind, size of the grind, amount of water, and temp. of water have more effect on the taste and quality than the actual bean itself.

    Discuss.

Oh. and lets not forget 100% pure kona coffee *drool*

Gotta get me some of that robusta stuff. Been on a Starfucks French Roast freshly ground w/ half 'n half bender for a year or so, time to switch it up a bit.

I will have to say that for me, the best is 100% pure Kona. Pricey shit though at around $25-$30/lb. That stuff is smoooooooth!

    Best prep:
    Very course grind
    French press machine
1 tbsp for each cup of coffee (usually 8 tbsps for a french press machine)
water just stopped from boiling temp
    steep 4 minutes
    press.
    drink.

oddly enough, as far as robusta beans go, I have found that they are typically in cheaper coffee's such as folgers.

Robusta beans are considered far lower in quality than Arabica Beans. Robusta beans are grown at lower altitudes and are easier to maintain. Thus they are often grown by large coffee companies to put in their jumbo generic coffee blends. Because robusta beans grow at lower altitudes they develop more caffine as a defense to mold growing on the plant/seeds. Robusta beans have an astringent taste and don't develop the complex flavors that arabica beans do when roasted. They do have twice the caffine but ususally taste like burned coffee when roasted to develop a "dark flavor"
Arabica beans develop much more complex flavors and have a smoother acidic taste. Arabica beans can develop flavors like chocolate, honey, wood, smoke etc. while still remaining acidic.

Go with Arabica all the time.

Wonder if that's why I always find that Starbucks coffee tastes burned...

or maybe it's just my low-budget taste buds.

fuck that aeropress crap. Looks cheap, and like it doesn't work worth a damn. If I want an espresso, I use a 15-18bar pump driven machine on burr ground grinds. For coffee, nothing beats a solid french press. A good turkish coffee can come in as a close second.

    Office Etiquette

Someone just called the guy sitting next to me (who isn't at his desk) and let the phone ring for at least a minute. WTF do people do this? I think etiquette dictates maybe 5-6 rings then you hang up.

    Have some fun with it-

Pick it up, fart in the phone, then hang it up. Sophmoric in nature, but fun.

That would have been good. I thought about picking up the phone and berating the person on the other end, but realized this would only accomplish what he set out to do. Namely, that if he let it ring long enough, eventually someone would pick up.

I would add "where it's grown, and how." Costa Rican Tarrazu coffee is still my favorite, followed closely by Blue Mountain (Jamaica) and Kona (Hawaii) but those cost at least 2x as much as the Tarrazu. There's some really great coffee being grown in Africa as well these days, IMHO.

I'm not much into the Indonesian coffees, like Sumatra or Sulawesi.- they seem more bitter. Then again I still prefer a good drip coffee to Espresso or French Press.
