Holy shit. I've only seen him 5-6 times, but this show blew all the rest right off the map. Didn't have too high of hopes, as a small indoor venue compared to big festival stages seemed like it might be constraining, but not! The stage was barely big enough for them and their instruments, of course that included Sam's fiddle, mando, electric mando, resophonic mando, etc. Great crowd, whole front row was sweet lil things. Sorry about the lack of pics. I was lucky enough to grab a seat in the upper balcony and had a great view.
Set list is a bit muddied by a mish mash of Crown Royal and PBR, so if anybody can add to it, please feel free! He played ~6 of his tunes, including crowd favorite 'Bananas'. The covers were where they really went off. 2 Allmans, including Whipping Post, 2 Marleys, Stevie Wonder, Cream, and a truly amazing version of White Bird. Old Larry and a few others may remember when the original came out, back in the days of good acid. The band was out of the Bay Area, kind of in the Jefferson Airplane mode, named It's a Beautiful Day [is that a great name or what?!]. He followed that up with a classic from jazz electric violinist Jean Luc Ponty. [Sammy's first virtuosity was on the fiddle] He came out solo for the first 15 minutes of the encore, then the band for another 30-40 minutes, including a great rendition of Dylan's Girl From the North Country that he dedicated to his sweet wife Lynne.
Tell ya folks, this was a show that, while having a bluegrass twang, simply rocked. His next show out West is Telluride, but he's got a good half dozen shows around the east, including the State Theater in DC Tippster! He's coming back to this area for the Targhee Bluegrass fest August 11. He's the headliner Saturday night, after/with David Grisman, the Seldom Scene and Tony Trishka, should be one great jam!
Gotta luv smart mags. Walked out of the show with a shit-eatin grin, and there's a dude from Bozeangeles, with a grin and a twelver of PBR, want one? Awesome...
