havent weighed myself since last friday, im trying to keep it to once a week weigh in so that i dont let the scale run my life. but last night at the gym i was definitely feeling an improvement in my performance. the obvious signs being that i got my best time in the 10k so far, and my second best distance for the hour overall. so thats good. the other sign being that i wasnt as winded or generally tired after last nights row as i was a week ago or definitely when i started. so thats good...my stamina and strength are improving.

i think my main problem in this whole thing is my eating routine. and i dont know a way around it that would make me happy. i lost some weight last summer when i came home, swam in the pool for a bit and then ate dinner right after (like at 7-8pm). and that worked because it was the only way...the pool only stayed open till 7 or 7:30. but now, since i go to the gym, the schedule is a bit more open. i get home at around 7, watch scrubs and daily show, go to the gym, get back home at around 10-11pm, then eat dinner. and i think this is whats causing some bottlenecks in the weight loss.

the thing is, i like scrubs. its a funny show. and i cant eat before working out because i cant work out on a full stomach, i feel like id puke it all up. so what can i do? no tivo btw. i know eating late is bad, but i also stay up later (like till 3am), so its not like i eat and go immediately to bed. although, im still not very active after dinner...ugh.

I haven't really been on TGR lately, but I wanted you guys to know that I'm checking this thread occassionally and support all of you. These changes are so hard, but so worthwhile.

I've switched to organic foods and I've got an order of grass fed meat coming off the internet. Not eating out of a box is a strange and wonderful thing. I even gave up coffee yesterday for the first time in forever and ever. Drinking green tea instead.

I start yoga again next week.

And I feel skinny.

Forgot to update. Updated.
Lost a few lbs but I havent actually done anything specific. Maybe just switching from boarding to skiing again, more work out?
My roomate not-owning a pub style grill at a bar anymore may be why..

5 more to go, I am sure they will come off in Peru.

I lost another pound, down to 131. My goal was 130, but I'm not planning to change anything. I'm curious where my weight will end up. I can still pinch an inch on my tummy. 15% body fat would be the shizz.

Fitday estimates that for my age and activity level I burn 2500 calories a day. I've got enough data (two months) now to show that I burn closer to 2800. I don't exercise per se, but I am on my feet and moving outside all day.

Studies of modern day hunter/gatherer societies show they eat 2200 calories a day and even though I was trying to keep under 2000, various cheats got me averaging right at 2200 for the last couple of months. Seems like a sweet spot because I feel REALLY good. Energy and appetite are lined up. I even gave up coffee.

42% of my calories come from fat. 27% carbs, 22% protein, 9% alcohol.

Here are my %RDAs for common nutrients.

Vitamin A 200.29
Vitamin D 77.43
Vitamin E 133.06
Vitamin K 351.55

Vitamin C 177.07
Thiamin 107.75
Riboflavin 234.68
Vitamin B-6 211.08
Vitamin B-12 563.59
Niacin 203.61
Folate 114.81

Iron 92.28
Zinc 135.87
Selenium 249.89

Calcium 77.87
Phosphorus 219.71
Magnesium 113.85

I really want to get blood work done at some point to measure cholesterol, insulin resistance, etc.

Whether you want to use sparkpeople or fitday or whatever, a food diary is the best thing ever! It's an easy and fun habit to record what you eat. Reveals so much. And if you don't do it, you are just sticking your head in the sand.

What was your reasoning for this? No calories in coffee.

Three reasons:

1) Getting rid of caffeine - Brett and I joke around that "Straight is the new high". I've never been straight in my entire life (well, since 16 anyway), so I don't even know what it's like to have a body that's not buzzed out in some way every single day. Looking for naturaly lucidity, higher energy levels through the day with no crash in the evening, better sleep, all those cool things.
2) Making room for green tea and its antioxidents. Green tea looks like really healthy stuff. It does have a smidge of caffeine, but not like what I was consuming.
3) Trying to get away from the kinds of foods that can upset natural ph balances and interfere with mineral absorption and cause leaching of my bones.

Congrats Steve!

And SheRa, my various testing and computer programs show I burn usually 2400-2800 a day, so I try to eat 2200 as well.

I can pinch an inch on the belly, and a couple inches inner thigh ( ), but otherwise am pretty good. Endurance, still slow from the winter, is improving rapidly, clothes fit nicely, so sometimes I lose motivation to "lose weight" or "lose fat" 'cause my body seems pretty happy. I'll keep up the healthy eating and exercising and we'll see what happens.

Edit: Good call on giving up coffee...I switched to tea a while ago (as I sit sipping a latte, the first such splurge in a month) and it's great. 3-4 cups of green tea a day and you'll be happy.

Double posting, but this is a separate question:

Is anyone else losing motivation to go to the gym? Now all I want to do is go outside, to run or bike. Really, to bike. I'm biking a lot in the afternoons - this snowstorm will dampen that for a few days, but... anyway...

My old routine was to work out almost every morning before work to swim, jog with the dog, or go to the gym (weights / sprints / spinning), and on the weekends do something fun to workout, i.e. ski or board.

This week and last week, every morning I planned to go to the gym, I decided instead to sleep in. And not to really sleep, but to stay in bed and doze and enjoy the snuggly warmth. Awake enough that it wouldn't be hard to get up, but just not in the mood to go to the gym. Swimming days or jogging days, no problem to get up and go, but the gym membership is being wasted....

Is this just me or is it typical of springtime?

I did the same thing (at least in regards to coffee, not everything else). Now I drink a large mug of green tea w/ 2 tea bags every morning. It gives me almost as much of a kick in the morning as coffee, but is so much better for me. Now instead of keeping 2 lbs. of coffee beans in the freezer, i've got 300 green tea bags in the cabinet. Stuff is cheap too, if you buy in bulk.

This made me think of a friend of mine who eats like a bird because she drinks so much. Her breakdown is probably 2% fat, 7% carbs, 1% protein and 90% calories from alcohol!

She hasn't gained a pound in years, but she look death warmed over.

not a big fan of the gym, for exactly that reason. If you can exercise and be outside at the same time, then why not, especially this time of year before it gets hot?

interesting to look at calorie breakdowns. over the last month, mine has been:
29% fat (6% saturated)
32% carbs
39% protein

i've averaged 1028 calories a day..

all of this doesn't count cheat meals, such as easter.. there have been maybe half-a-dozen over the last month.

What do you eat if your averaging 1028 calories a day. I've been cutting out tons of stuff and I'm still a little over 1200. It's so hard.

FUCK!

I've been taking the eating a little slower that usual. Been biking a ton more (burning about 900kcal xtra/ day) and got onto the scales today, thinking for the first time in months that I am def seeing improvement.
