Beware foods with high caloric density (a lot of calories for the volume). Dried fruits are a classic example of this. These foods are good if you are need a lot of energy and don't have time/amenities to eat a proper meal.
However, they can make your daily caloric intake skyrocket if you are idly chomping them at your desk.

Foods with low caloric density (typically foods with high water & fiber content - e.g. lettuce etc.) when you are in a more sedentary mode.

Forget where I read this (Time or U.S. News & World Report) a few years ago, but the propenent of this was a nutritionist out of Pennsylvania State University if you want to check it out.

I work in a field that is full of fits and starts. I typically am very active and also eat a lot. When work would get overbearing I had a hard time adjusting the volume of food I would eat and I used to gain weight and then when it would back off I'd get fit again. Now I adjust my eating style (in terms of caloric density) based on how much work encroaches on my exercise.
I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

Thanks. That may explain my recent weight gain. I think I have the problem of altering my intake according to my activity levels also. I will stick to fresh fruit (apples, grapes, berries and the like) until my thesis hell has finished.

    Anyway, my current status:

    Weight: 149 lbs
    Waist: 31.5 ''
    Hips: 40 ''
Bust: (your joking if you think I'm sharing that!!)

I would like to get back to and maintain 144 lbs if poss.

When is the next weigh in?

Shit. How did I miss this thread? Haven't checked the boards in quite some time but I've been on my own personal weight loss kick. Jumped into South Beach and modified it a bit... anyhow, I've dropped 20 in six weeks and just weighed in at 206 yesterday afternoon. All the old clothes (pants & shorts) I couldn't fit into six weeks ago are now back in the rotation! Looking to drop 6 to 10 more but at 6'3" not much more than that. Keep going people!!

well, i made it to the top of humphrey's, but it was sure to spank me. endurance-wise i was ok as long as i took it slow, but a thunderstorm above treeline and a loose gravel slope that almost decided to take me down with it really scared the shit out of me.

i guess now i have the respect for mountains that you can't learn from a book. i'll post a tr sometime in the next week.

    So...
Does anyone have a reliable source for calculating how much protein/fat/carbs a person needs in one day.

I know the zone diet ratios is 40 carbohydrate 30 protein and 30 fat for example.

But how do you translate that into portion sizes? How do you know you're getting too much protein in one sitting? (I hear the body can't metabolize more than a certain amount in one meal - true/false?)

The only problem with fitday/spark/etc is that your feedback happens after you eat and not before when you could do something about it.
I'm just a simple girl trying to make my way in the universe...
I come up hard, baby but now I'm cool I didn't make it, sugar playin' by the rules
If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.

Everyone should read Chris Carmichael's (Lance Armstrong's trainer) Food for Fitness. It tackles fitness for athletes (and weight loss as well) from a very good point of view.

It also answers your question trayc, as well as most of the other questions in here.

Also, the reason I'm not answering you trayc is that it depends on too many things to give you a straight up x% carbs y% protein and z% fat. For instance, your fitness level, goals, etc.

Zone teaches palm of the hand per (meat, veg, etc.). And Steve, how do I get on the spreadsheet? I've been keeping track but forget how to get on. Good luck with the peak bag!

Hope everyone is sticking to their guns on their way of eating. I've been reading and reading and the bottom line is pretty simple - processed foods were designed to extend shelf life and increase profits at the expense of your nutrition.

The grassfed beef I got from Slanker's is good: http://texasgrassfedbeef.com/index.htm

But the sockeye salmon tastes waaaaaay fishy. Need another source for seafood. I read that eating cilantro can leach the mercury out of your body and mitigate some of the effects of eating ocean fish.

    Steve-you look good!

I have 10 personal training sessions again coming up in the next month. My ass will be getting kicked (more than I do on my own) starting Tuesday.

I'll put my weight in on the last weigh in date in July.

making progress, just not as good as expected. I should come in about 295.

discipline has been way off that last two months. california, where I had no intentions of dieting, was bad enough - but then i got back from california and did things half-assedly.

i expect to make huge gains in month 4.

Still hovering around 182-183. Both of my kids were sick all of last week, so I didn't get a chance to exercise and the lack of sleep made me want to eat comfort food. That combo was bad news for weight loss.

I've been laking serious motivation to do anything useful. Main part of show season is coming up, so I'm thinking I need to do better.
    It's 5 o'clock somewhere.
