    Help with my Tele turn...

    I know....

    *JONG!*

I spent some time yesterday working on my Telemark turn.

I noticed a problem that I need some help with.
I'd ask on Telemark tips, but I registered over a week ago, and I have not been authorized on that board...

Anyhow, I have oticed that I tend to favor my left leg. When I drop the knee on my left leg, I can Tele turn just fine, and I am confident making LEFT turns. I can push into the uphill ski and make it carve all day long. Again, very confident with it. Works great.

    However,
When I drop my right knee, it feels kind of like I have a some marshmallows between my toes and the boot, and I am having a VERY hard time edging the uphill ski when I make the right turn.

    Any tips?

Also, my left boot has a power strap, my right boot doesn't (well, neither actually do, I sort of McGuyver'd it and am using some Cam straps).
Do power straps really make THAT much of a difference?

    Thanks!
    -James

Tighten up your stance. You're probably trailing that right leg much farther back and relying on your downhill ski to make the turn. Make sure your heel is under your arse.

Your canting might be fucked. Put on your ski boots and stand in a normal stance on a flat floor. Are the soles flat on the ground?

If that is good to go, you need to work on monomarks. Find a medium pitched groomer, go into a tele stance on your weak side, and make turns both ways while holding that stance. I could never figure out why this seemingly stupid trick helps, but it does.

Agreed. Fix your heel, fix your problems.

Now that that's out of the way. If this isn't a troll, get another strap for your boot. B-When you are on really mellow slopes or cat tracks, get in your stance with your right knee dropped, practice picking up your front leg. It will give you awareness of how much pressure you are actually putting on your dropped, right ski. You'll probably see that your uphill ski on this side doesn't have enough weight on it. You are probably hooking your right turns too.

    Just parallel the right turns.

I had to send an e-mail to tele-tips to remind 'em, and they fired up my account right away...

Most people favor turning to one side over the other at first. I was the same way: felt comfy turning left and way out of sorts turning right. Just practice practice practice. But its completely normal.

I still almost always drop in into a right turn. I should work on that.
