    Damnit Steep and Cheap

So last night I wanted to buy the Northface Pivotal Backpack off of Steep and Cheap. Go through the ordering method and submit my payment and all of that (even getting raped on the shipping to Canada). There were lots of backpacks left, I check back an hour later and the pack is still on sale...

This morning I get this email from Steep and Cheap.

    "Hi!
Sorry, it looks like you were a bit slow to pull the trigger.

The item you ordered sold out seconds before your order was placed. Sorry
for any inconvenience but in the fast pace world that is SAC, things go
fast. I'm going to cancel your order, so we can get the refund back on your
card as soon as possible. "

A bit slow to pull the trigger? wtf don't blame it on me SAC, there was plenty of time, I was really disappointed and needed to complain.... Thanks... First time trying to buy off them, what a great experience

They probably just sent you the wrong email. They can't ship any North Face products to Canada so that is why they couldn't fill your order.

Shipping to Canada is likely the problem. Got an issue, contact their customer service. I had a problem with an order (which turned out to be the fault of UPS), but the Backcountry.com/SAC customer service was REALLY EXCELLENT. They went out of their way to make sure I ended up happy and responded to my problem almost immediately. It was a really nice change of pace to have such excellent and helpful customer service in this day and age.

The same thing happened to me, but with a different item. The bar was still 1/2 full AFTER I ordered, got my confirmation, then a day later "waited too long to pull the trigger."

I was pissed, wrote an angry email, then figured maybe there was a one-time glitch and I shouldn't be so angry... hopefully it doesn't happen again.

    Note: I'm not in Canada.

bakers, I managed to pull the trigger on one when there were only about 10% left... I got a Large, but I'm not sure it's going to fit. If I don't like it / it doesn't fit, you can have it if you still want one. I'll PM you once I get it.

There is usually a " * US shipment only " at the bottom of the item description for Northface, Arc'teryx, Oakley ect. items that can't be shipped to Canada - betcha you'll see it now

IF canookistan shipping is the issue, solicit reshipping assistance from a stateside mag... I'd do it for you but i am sure you can find someone closer than Michigan in order to keep your shipping costs down.

Because the authorized Canadian retailers and dealers are getting cut out of the loop. It is quite common, and there are some sound reasons for it.

doesn't really matter to me, but, it's the internet, wtf does it matter where it goes, I wouldn't think it's any different then sport-conrad or telemark pyrenees (sp)

FWIW, I would check one out before I bought that, no, wait, I have and thats why I wouldn't buy it

Exclusive dealership contracts are a MAJOR investment for distributors, and having 'grey-market' goods be offered and delivered at huge discounts not only jeapardizes the effectiveness (and exclusivity) of the investment, it also tends to drive down the percieved valuation of the product in question by the public. It can be a death knell for a brand that is operating on tight margins.

    (not neccesarily referencing N.F. here)

Look on the bright side. Now you don't need to get raped by UPS when they charge you a brokerage fee of about $50. SAC only ships UPS, UPS sucks. Until they change I will not order from SAC.

Open a retail store in a small town, you will see my point instantly.
I am not defending the policies, per se, merely explaining them to the best of my understanding.

It is not as simple as it may appear, you are dealing with tax, tarriff, and VAT issues, (or actually skirting them), and that is why it is considered 'grey market'. What TP and SC do (outside of their home countries, etc), and is technically illegal, but basically unenforceable. It is, however, overlooked by the manufacturers due to the volume that outlets such as that can produce.

It is an old, tired point, but think of it the next time you go to a town and can't find a local, core shop to give you beta, or sell you a map.

Maybe you haven't seen it since they changed this, but they now have a standard shipping option that includes the tariff. Shipping is still quite expensive even on little things, but you won't have to pay customs (at least that's been my experience in the 3 things I've bought).
