    ipod-Mac compatibility question

let me start by saying I am way 'ole' school' when it comes to my computing....
    My question is:
Has anyone hooked up a 'new generation ipod' to an old system running 10.2x? And if so have you found compatibility issues??
The new generation state 10.3x/USB2.0 as minimum requirements....but sometimes things work anyway....so I would like to know if that is the case with 10.2x and a new ipod.
    Thanks.

    A few notes:
One should update their computer every 5 years to stay current
Ipods DO NOT like to be washed AND dried. I have not determined if they like either mutually exclusive...but I would assume-no

Not sure about the 10.2 system (I run 10.3 currently), but I safely hook up a current ipod onto a titanium powerbook using an old skool USB port. In other words, I don't think USB2 is strictly necessary, although it would be a bit faster in transferring your tunes.

You need iTunes 7 for the latest video iPods, which requires 10.3.9.

    From Apple:
Macintosh computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    iTunes 7 or later
...so I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

That is the crux of my question.....I want to know if they have been 'field tested' to run with itunes 6 w/o video.

You really should consider upgrading. 10.3 was a big step over previous versions and 10.4 has a lot of polish on top of that. Although 10.5 will be out soon, so I wouldn't just run out and buy 10.4 right now.

Your biggest issue though isn't really with software, it's mostly with how you're going to hook up an iPod. If you're running a machine with 10.2; chances are really good that it doesn't have USB 2.0, only firewire. The iPod Photo (Gen. 4?) was the last model to have Firewire. The current iPods will still connect via USB 1, but it will be reallllllly slow.

I have this same problem, so I ended up buying a refurb iPod Photo. This is mostly due to the fact that I have over 1,000 cds and it would take me forever and a day to load all that via USB 1.

If you're only transferring what's on your computer and won't be adding much music after that, then I wouldn't worry about it. Updating your iPod only adds new songs, it doesn't completely reload your library. So the initial load would take a while, but additionaly songs won't be too bad. Naturally, if you're going to be adding tons of stuff over time and/or removing/adding songs; then you might want to consider buying an old refurb with Firewire.

Thanks Arty...I wound up picking up a refurb shuffle to hold me over...I am waiting for the 10.5 to come out...and then I will buy a new computer. My G3 Pismo is a venerable machine...but showing some grey..
    Thanks again for the info!
