Utards - Need a water heater?

We're installing our new tankless water heater today, so if anyone needs a 40 gallon water heater, it's out front for sale for $50. It's 6 years old, still was working fine (just a little small), but we wanted to upgrade to the tankless. Probably has at least a few years of life left if you need one.

Not having to wait for hot water is something that is quite easy to get used to.

A word of caution about the tankless heaters.

if you live in a cold climate (I suspect you do) make sure you got the flue damper kit with the tankless heater.

Most tankless heaters are vented through the side wall, even if not same applies. This pipe, if not closed off when not in use, can allow cold outside air to come into the tankless heater and freeze the heating coil causing it to split and make a huge mess and cost you a bunch.

Your old tank didn't need this as it always had 40 gallons of hot water in it and hence it didn't freeze. Your new Tankless has NO STORAGE and ONLY FIRES when hot water is needed.

Many of these tankless heaters are sold at the stores without the kits. THe installation instructions make mention of the damper kit, but lots of people think because it didn't come with it, or the sales guy didn't sell it to them they don't need it.

    Read the Instructions carefully.

Also if it's a Natural Gas unit make sure the unit is set up by a gasfitter or someone who knows what they are doing. A specific Inches of Water Column gas pressure is needed for the burners to operate properly and at the most efficient. DO NOT ASSUME IT WORKS OUT OF THE BOX ! ! ! ! !

Enjoy your new Tankless and the wait that occures sometimes till you get hot water from the tap. Hint... insulate all the hot water lines you can get to.

Everyone we've talked to who has one is pretty happy to really happy with it. The problems we've heard are from either getting too small of a model (we got the biggest available), or from having long water runs where it takes a long time for the hot water to run the length of the house (and ours will just need to run directly upstairs and that's about it). We have the flue kit, etc.

edit: it works and it's freaking hot! Yay!
