Not the case at Sierra at Tahoe. Probably one of the rare days when it's the best spot in South Lake Tahoe (if not all of Tahoe). Total raging winds and blizzard conditions from bell to bell, but Grandview never stopped turning. There are tons of trees on that mountain with a good, steep enough, fall line to keep the pow protected and many stashes untracked. Being we are still on the low side for base, the boulders are still big and it's pillow city in those trees. Now that the kids are skiing fast in the pow, it's tons of fun. However, even in the protected zones those winds packed down the upper mountain pow in the afternoon. Still soft, but no longer as deep. Lower well protected (NE aspect) were still $$$$. If it's storming tomorrow, that's where I'd head back to.

Zippy called to tell me he is stuck at Kirkwood tonight (), but let me know it was epic today with only chair 5 running at half speed (). He said he's really trying to get home cause he doesn't think they'll even be running chair #6 tomorrow. But.....if the Heave is able to run the gondola tomorrow, it's going to be 2500' of choking fun all the way down to the office at lunch time!

Folks, Tuesday and/or Wednesday are shaping up for Day(s) of the Year

I was there today and I concur. The pillows in the trees were oh so big and fluffy.

yeah a few of us made the right call. great running in to you and 'woo this afternoon and hitting some of those pillowy lines.

looks like i'm hitting SAT tomorrow morning as well. with the 8 inches of fresh and the wind deposit, it should be reasonably sick.

K'wood had 5 and 11 open on Sunday. The snow is letting up but it is still blowin outside.

I'd agree that 6 is unlikely tomorrow, shit.

We'll get out and ski in the morning and then pack up and head home provided the spur opens up.

    Well.

Kirkwood was definitely good today - all runs off 5 and 11 were fun to muck about in. Winds weren't too bad - they filled in tracks.

    Now, the story.

I was one of the lucky few that managed to get out to 88E at 2:30pm after hearing a bird tell me that Caltrans was going to open 88E for a short window of time, so we could crash in South Lake or take the 50 home, since the 88W was shuttled for the night, indefinitely, and Kirkwood Lodging was giving us no love (they can eat it).

So, we get out to the 88W gate at Carson Pass, expecting to be passed through at 3pm, as the little bird said, but no.. Caltrans started pushing people through at 5pm, and then did a "shift change", where the next shift showed up at 8pm, and we finally got through to South Lake. Pretty bad vis too. It's not the blizzard or driving on Carson Pass that bothered me, it was sitting in the car for 6 and a half hours that was lame. Caltrans wasn't telling us anything either - the jackass sat in his big orange truck and refused to get out when we walked a mile to ask him what the plan was. Caltrans, in all their heroic work, can suck it for this one. A few people ran out of gas as well, and with no cell coverage in the area, they were in a bit of a hole.

Posting from the Holiday Inn in South Lake - thinking about doing some turns at the Heave tomorrow - it's stopped snowing and winds have calmed down.

That is the major shits sitting in line waiting for those ignert bastards in the orange trucks to give the ok. I heard the company line at the front desk when I was walking by, about lodging being booked up, that sucks too.

I'm s'posed to be at work on Tuesday, but if we keep getting hammered here at K'wood, I will be forced to ski till the roads open.

These high winds have been nasty shit this season, but it's still good snow!

I never heard what was going on with the heli, I heard the ambulance and a little later the heli, then the heli came back around.

6:20 am at KW. Winds 10-15, some gusts of 25-30.

Another day of skiing 5 & 11 until boredom sets in.

Lets just say that I droped the Sugar Daddys off on the way home to have 3 core shots filled. Upper half is getting there but the wind really did a number blowing away ALOT of this new snow, bottom half still really bony.

Cali would not be my choice today, if I get out it will either be Stagecoach or PH.

zippy was right. no kirkwood today. cohee seemed to think that 6 and 10 were unlikely for tuesday as well. You know it is bad if he is already being pessimistic 24 hours in advance.

well off to either the heave or sierra.

I was planning on calling in snowed in today. But with the winds...so not worth it. Got some good turns yesterday, but there's only so much fun you can have on low angle and cold slow lifts. So, instead I "drove" back in semi-whiteout conditions, waited for hours at the pass to be shuttled through, dealt with tons of gapers on 50 who don't understand that "remove chains" means just that.

Oh yeah, and I left Kirkwood at 2. Got to SF at midnight.

Got my sweet day in on Friday at Kirkwood.. Nice getting thigh deep at full speed with a 178 swallowtail, and over waist deep on deep turns in the chutes... Great day...

Almost tried to day trip yesterday (Sunday), but kinda glad I didn't. I was worried about the road conditions, and it sounds like it was pretty gnarly... Went through that mess once last year, didn't feel up to it again driving solo...

Wednesday is looking like my next sick day... Wish it could be sooner, but sounds like the winds might be conspiring against anything too epic before then... At least it's fully going off now... Should make for some good spring skiing now too...

Preparing for a Wednesday trip, but it almost sounds like it's going to storm and snow all through Saturday.

Onehotchili - If you get any "inside" info on whether alpine is going to open tomorrow make sure to post. I am not sure if I need to be sick tomorrow or Wednesday.

Motherfuckin wind!! Babies momma has the next 2 days off and I wanna ski the deepness. I guess if I have to hike then I have to hike.

The worst part is that I bet the snow ain't gonna be super deep come Wednesday with all the wind packing it down real nice.

11 was fun for oh, 6 runs of untracked.

Will let the wind and snow fill it in and hit it again in a couple of hours.

Not to mention a bear infestation. Be sure to lock your skis if you go up.
