    Potential Itenareries

So I quit my job last week! I notched my way up to a new title at a prestigious new employer in town (go me); Anyways it’s a great opportunity for me and means two weeks off starting next week. Unfortunately I am teaching a class Monday 3/5 and Wednesday 3/7, so I am lining up some potential travel plans for next week. Last minute flights seem to be pretty reasonable to certain locations and I am keeping travel times into consideration given my tight agenda.

    Option 1 – Jetsetter combo

Salt Lake 2/24 – 3/1 – Currently seems like good snow, hang, stay and ski with Maggots presumably. Might involving ditching skis in SLC and recovering somehow.
Maui 3/1 – 3/4 – My folks are on the island. I have been before, so a quick hit is all I would need and SLC has direct flights. I’d get to visit the folks and if the surf is right, catch a few waves (I suck).

    Option 2 – SLC / Reno

Salt Lake 2/24 – 3/1 – Again, currently seems like good snow, hang, stay and ski with Maggots presumably.
Reno (Tahoe) 3/1 – 3/4 – Again more time skiing with Maggots, snow seems more questionable than Utah but improving. Have never skied Tahoe in decent conditions.

    Option 2 – Road Trip -> Maui
It’s incredibly reasonable for me to add Maui into the trip right now. I could fly out later in the week, and kick it with the folks for a few days after a road trip to Jackson, Aspen, or Telluride. I have been before, so I really only want to be in Maui for just more than a long weekend. I am not huge on the beach but am very close with my parents, and visiting them in Maui is always better than CT, and allows me to play the card “well I visited you in x” when the holiday travel discussion comes up in the fall. (I have been screwed on holiday travel to the east coast before and avoid it all costs)

I still have open Itinerary from 3/8-3/11 – for which I am thinking Jackson, Aspen, or Telluride most likely. Probably no flying, but a quick hit to Reno or SLC is still also feasible.

So what would you do? (I am open to more options of course)

Go with option 1, nothing quite like great skiing followed by great surfing, especially if you can link them in the same day. I did that here in socal years ago, and it was great. Peaked out and skied the Baldy bowl at sunrise, then lounged on the beach at Newport by noon. Skiing and bikinis on the same day is the way to go.

Or, just skip the skiing and spend the entire time on Maui.

Wow, congrats. When I saw you a few weeks ago, sounded like you were sticking with the current employer. Hope all is well.

Oh yeah, Maui with the folks sounds like a great plan.

Ahem...there was a PNW option missing from that itinerary. We have storms stacked up right now (anti-jinx) and by the time you get out here, it could be going off for reals (anti-jinx).

Edit: It's a five hour flight from PDX or seattle to Honolulu

Thanks MD9. It took some negotiating to get things where I wanted, but they eventually put together an offer that worked for me.

edit: girlski - line yourself up to ski early next week and I will bump this option up in the running.

SLC RENO MAUI. Few days at each breaks things up, travel from SLC to Reno is quick and you can gamble in Reno.

    Hev-

To detail all the interknowables in the local maggotry to the PNW maggotry is far too detailed and time consuming, regardless I'm sure that your name is good enough to get the full connection there: DO IT.

    SLC Weather

    Tahoe Weather

I think the choice is clear: Prolific Nort Wet.

nice move hev. Weather is moving in everywhere, throw a dart, travel, then slay some pow. Maui would be a great ending with all the cold we've had this year.

Everyone omits the PNW. I mean look at this august collection of ski fiends, a quorum of snow addicts, more ski crap per capita (or is that ski cap per crapita) here than anywhere else in the cosmodigisphere.

But I'd be willing to bet as much as a shiny fresh nickel that WA is the least frequently visited ski state among this mangled consortium of weirdos.

Anyway, should your wanderings land you around the central to South Puget Sound, fire a flare o'er me bow matey and we'll shiver your timbers with some decent turns.

    Tales of:
    Rain
    Fog
    wildly oscilating freezing levels
    and thick snow

all serve to keep travelers from risking precious time and financial resources on a trip to the PNW. That's not even counting the boring terrain that y'all are stuck with.

Congratulations on the new job. The PNW and then a 5 hour flight to Maui sounds pretty sweet. Then again anything followed by Maui is pretty sweet.

It's all about timing. The PNW happens when the storm cycles hit in November-December, then there's always a lull in January, as Powstash has rediscovered. Then the late Feb/early March storm racks come in.

It says more about 'stick in the muds', anyway, weenies who can't just throw things to the wind and search out new stashes outside of the glare of the plopular press.

And you're so right, the terrain is so boring. Alpental ? schnozzzzzzzzzzz....yawn.....dweeezzzzzz.....

trust me: tis better to have a gnarly rep and few skiers than an outsized rep and lots of hacks.

Keep an eye here for the 2-3 day outlook and 4-5 day too:

The 2-3 day has been pretty accurate.
