    Back Pain Advice

The obvious suggestion is "go see the doctor." I know that, and I will shortly.

Here's the story - back at the end of December I went up to Whistler for three days. By the end of the third day my lower back was sore and the drive home was a little uncomfortable because I had a burning pain that went down across the bone on the right half of my ass and into my leg. It cleared up quickly and I didn't think much of it.

About a week later I skied at Crystal and by the end of the day my back was killing me. Skiing anything bumpy was torture, anything that caused me to bend over hurt. The drive home was also miserable with that pain in my ass and leg returning worse than before.

Since that time (a month and a half now) my lower back has been chronically sore and tight, especially on the right side. I'm pretty much only comfortable when reclining or laying down.

I've been stretching and trying to stay active but I haven't been skiing at all. Been jogging lightly (not as hard as I was), fast walking, and short bike rides. Some days I don't feel much of anything, other days if I bend over it's really hard to straighten up again. Working construction doesn't help... I keep hoping this will get better but it hasn't and I'm due at the straightline camp at Snowbird weekend after next.

Any idea what I've done to myself? What can I do to help it as quickly as possible? Everything I've read says staying moderately active and stretching should be helping...

I'm dealing with a non-related health issue right now so didn't pile this one on at the same time. Maybe I should have? I was thinking I'd get the doc started on this one once we figure out what my other issue is.

Dammit. Turned 39 in December and all of a sudden I'm falling apart. Been relentlessly healthy 'til now, other than a blown ACL ten years ago.

My inital impression would be that you might have something happening with a disc or possible your SI joint. Repetitive flexion of the spine at work combined with a burning pain in the buttocks would make me suspicious of a disc injury. But as I said it could also be an SI joint issue. Have your doc check you out and write you a script to go see a good therapist. They might be able to give you a better idea of what is going on.

Sounds like irritated nerves somewhere around L4, L5 or sacrum. I have the same problem from time-time - caused by degenerating disc at l5-s1. I'm able to keep the problem at bay with a lot of stretching and strengthening of muscles in low back - lot of work on swiss ball and a lot of sea kayak paddling. Someday though, I'm looking at a discectomy w/ fusion at l5-s1

Vinman has it pegged. Get in to see doc to get PT. If you have good enough health insurance, try to get the doc to order an mri so you at least have a baseline of the problem.

Ugh. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but thanks anyway! My insurance is pretty good so hopefully it will cover this. I have two sisters and a brother. One sister has had all kinds of back problems and like three fusions over the years. I hope I'm not as bad off as she is...

Ask yourselves this. Would you call an Electrician to fix your plumbing? Then why in the FUCK go see a Drug pushing MD for a back problem when you should go see a Chiropractor and Sports Therapist????? Oh yeah fusing your spine = stupidest fucking thing ever done!!!!

I have noticed that the best thing for back pain is to stretch and constantly be mobile. My back used to kill in high school due to my short leg from a skiing accident. I would always be home doing homework and sitting in the computer chair. I delivered ice this summer. Everyday i was unloading 7 and 22 pound bags at gas stations, grocery stores, etc. Wahla... my back hurt maybe the first week and then boom it started to get into the swing of things and never gave me trouble the rest of summer. Ive tried sleeping happens, physical therapy, you name it. Nothing has worked better than keeping a constant movement of the muscles that tend to lock up and cause the pain. Granted physical therapy should have probably work, but i was lazy and never did at-home exercises.

Best of luck tho... back pain is a bitch

I ruptured my L4-5 and bulging at S-1. The pain down the leg is the sciatic nerve being aggravated. The only thing that helped my pain, beside pain meds, was acupuncture. Seriously. A couple guys that I worked with did the same thing. We did heavy lifting. Had a lot of back injuries were I worked.

Don't get surgery. Try every option first. But, the acupuncture should give you results. Good luck!

I've broken my back 4 times, my neck once.
Five sessions of Orthobionomy gave me more relief than a million bucks spent on chiropractic, massage, rolfing, and orthopedic treatments combined.
I still all kinds of physically fucked up, but sfter an orthobionomy treatment, I ski better than I thought I could possibly ski - every time. Gotta be the best spinal therapy I've ever had.
