Just got a call from my housemate that the Mavericks big wave contest is today!
I'm on my way and will report back with pictures.
Can't believe it - they haven't done the contest in about 3 years, so the waves must be BIG.

Cool.
Definately get some pics. I was checking out the web cam but have absolutely no perspective as to wave size, but apparently they're big. [/shrugs]
nice WSD...i am insalely jealous of you also right now!
i had a hard time getting a scale on wave height also, then i saw about a 25-30 foot sailboat go by...waves pretty much as tall as the mast it looked like.

You just can't call time out and paddle back to the beach if you don't like the way things are going!

just came back from there. Not nearly as big as I expected, but still fun to watch. I'm guessing waves were about 12-15, though I could be totally wrong. They didn't look very steep - seem to be turning into whitewater fairly quickly. Still scary as hell to see people ride those suckers though!
The place was packed - tons of people watching, and the weather is beautiful.
Pix to follow.

There's a really good documentary out there about the guys who pioneered Mavericks, it's nucking futz.
vapor lock - bitch.
Werd. Jeff Clark surfed that place for 10 years before he told the world that Nor-Cal has the gnarliest big wave spot in the world. He is nucking futz.Originally posted by phUnk

12-15 ain't that big for a big wave contest. In front of my house in Santa Cruz it was hitting 20-22 feet yesterday. Must have dropped a shit load.

Fuck me. Double to triple overhead in LJ? You guys think THAT'S crowded, you should see that area on a "normal" day. 20-30 people in the line-up aren't rare anymore.![]()
At least this swell kept some of the wannabe's away.
If you could look in the eyes of half those guys they would be saying" i'm fuckin shittin a brick I'm so scared" Looks like easy pickens for some XXXTREME La Jolla Cove![]()
I guess airin' into the Top is different but it looks da same.
I suffer from T.O.A.D. syndrome when I surf.
