Got my pieps updated today at the OR show to the 3.1 software that was released just this month.
I only bought this one this past fall of 06 and there were already TWO upgrades. Some cool stuff. . . .
upgrade 1 is a frequency tester. you hold your buddy's beacon straight up to the pieps and push and hold the arrow button (the one right under the display you've never used before) and it tells you where your friend is transmitting relative to + or - 457kHz so you can be like, "hey man, you're cool" or "hey man, you might want to narrow your search field if the shit hits the fan"
upgrade 2 is the "smart transmitter." The pieps automatically picks up on any overlapping signals and adjusts it's own signal to prevent the overlapping and make it easier for the searcher to isolate the two signals (even easier for another pieps to isolate/mark)
(also, another hint i was told for searching in mult. burials....in the event of finding 1 of many beacons and marking the first, getting a new readout for say 10m away.....go ten meters and then quickly (like in a super flash so as not to screw up any of your other partners who are in search mode, i mean REALLY REALLY FAST) flip your beacon to send and back to search, which will reset it super fast and then pick up the closest signal again (which should now be that second beacon).
anyway, super stoked! If you live in the SLC area and haven't upgraded you should be able to get it done at Black Diamond or White Pine Touring. DOOO IT!
