For those of you stuck in San Fran, check this out...

    sweet, sweet christ.

A VERY POWERFUL PACIFIC STORM HAS GENERATED WHAT COULD BE THE_LARGEST_WAVES RECORDED SO FAR THIS WINTER ALONG THE NORTHERN AND_CENTRAL_CALIFORNIA COAST...AND PERHAPS THE LARGEST IN THE LAST 10_YEARS. THE_ LEADING EDGE OF THE LARGE WAVES REACHED THE NORTHERN COASTAL_WATERS_LATE LAST NIGHT AND WILL REACH THE CENTRAL WATERS LATER THIS MORNING._THE WAVES WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD THROUGH TONIGHT AS THEY SPREAD SOUTHWARD DOWN THE COAST.

COMBINED SEAS WILL BEGIN BUILDING TO AROUND 15 FEET LATER_ THIS MORNING...REACHING NEAR 20 FEET BY THIS AFTERNOON AND THEN_PEAKING_ BETWEEN 25 AND 40 FEET TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY ON THE_OCEAN...AND REACHING 10 TO 20 FT IN THE MONTEREY BAY. IN ADDITION TO WAVE_ SETS IN_THIS RANGE...THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF A FEW EVEN_LARGER WAVES_OCCURRING FROM TIME TO TIME...PERHAPS UP TO 50 FEET. THESE_HIGH SURF CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST LATE_FRIDAY...BEFORE SEAS SUBSIDE TO AROUND 15 FEET.__

I just got a call from my housemate driving up the coast who estimated it was 20 feet at Pacifica (linda mar - taco bell beach). He said it was unsurfable, but huge.

THAT"S FREAKING HUGE for that beach.

Mavericks is likely going off, so I'll try to take a break from my work and walk down there, if I can. I still can't drive with my shoulder, and I"m about a mile away, so I'm gonna have to brave the storm!! I'm charging up the digital camera as we speak.

Here's the live webcam, though when I clicked it, I couldn't get anything:

I'll keep you all posted and try to get pix asap.

i got the cam at mavsurfer.com.
doesnt look like anyone is in the water, and i cant get a good feel for size/scale from looking at.
it looks kind of sloppy, and scary, and cold.
meanwhile, back at the ranch...heres one of my spots

add to those elements the sharks and the reef, and you've got yourself just about the gnarliest surf spot in the continental US.

cold water and scariness doesnt bother me, but sharks do.

    WOOHOO!

    THE CONTEST IS TODAY!

Screw work - I'm walking over to check it out!!!!!

Taking my camera - damn - I wish I had a bigger zoom lens.

They haven't done the contest in three years or so, and I"m not even sure if it's still sponsored by Billabong, or if it's just Jeff Clark's thing.

Wait...what the hell am I doing typing? I'm on my way!
