    Squaretail: An idea...

I don't know if this would mess up Volkl's relationships with ski shops, but I was wondering if it would be possible to offer a direct-order from Volkl for certain skis, say, 197 goats or katanas.

I know you'd like us to pester our local shops and drive up demand and all, but frankly, I, like (I guess) many others on the board, won't pay shop retail prices. And frankly, I'd wouldn't feel honest if I said that my local shop should order something I wouldn't consider buying from them.

However, if Volkl offered a chance to order the ski directly from them for $500-$550, I could see a lot of people ordering, possibly enough to justify making the big lengths. That way volkl would still make their sales margins, and people could get the skis at a good price. Think of it as a form order, just with less discount.

I know I'd be willing to put down a deposit for 197, explosiv-ish stiff katana (assuming the end price was right). And I bet I'm not the only one. It seems to me like this might be a decent way to guarantee demand for the big skis.

    Hi Squatch,

Sorry, but we just couldn't do that. We'd be nothing without our dealers and they surely would not embrace any type of direct sales program.

I/We really do appreciate the interest. Maybe there's another way...we could turn this thread into somewhat of a Katana 197 petition. Anybody genuinely interested in the ski can post...If we get enough posts, I'll print the thread and include it in the assorted materials for the buying shows. This would hopefully show the reatilers that there is a market for this.

Could it be done in a bulk-purchase-discount through a retailer? I'm thinking of the BCA Covert pack deal set up through backcountry.com. Or does Volkl have minimum retail prices that it requires of its retailers?

Squaretail, on another note, how come it looks like the Katana was a swallowtail except that there is some clearish material to round out the tail?

Go to the volkl snowboard site (I'd link it but it's flashed...http://www.voelkl-snowboards.de/en/index.html) and check out the selecta line.

So that it skis like a swallowtail, and sells like a Gotama?

I did tell my local shop that I wanted a pair of Katana 197. But, the dude's prices are a little high (like MSRP sometimes ), so we'll see what happens.

The Katana's tail was actually one of the cooler innovations/ideas I saw at SIA. You've got a twin tip and a swallow tail in one ski. Brilliant.

As far as I understand Volkl's policy, it is just a minimum advertised price.

I would be willing to work out a TGR group buy for any skis I carry, Volkl, Movement, Rossi, Salomon, Elan, K2
