WWMD: Would you join TGR just to get a free Carfax report?

I recently bought a car to replace Mulva - my beloved '94 Volvo wagon. I posted a thread offering free carfax reports to any Maggots that may be in the market for a new ride. I've had several people on the board send me a PM requesting a report and I've been happy to help.

Today I got a PM from somebody with ZERO posts; s/he joined today so they could get a free Carfax report.

Now, I don't really care about the free report. It does, however, kind of bug me that this person, in all likelihood, joined for no other reason than to get said report gratis. Wedding Crashers comes to mind.

    Do I send him/her the free report I have for a 2002 Toyota Camry? Or . . . . ????

    WWMD?

Not a maggot, then not worthy of maggot privileges

Although I will say there are just so many lurkers.... chances are this person has been lurking a long time. S/he might have seen your thread a long time ago and kept it in mind. I have no problem with lurkers, but it would be nice if they took something (like your report), if they gave something back in return.

I bet his first real post will be in Gear Swap selling some "only used twice, excellent condition" Pocket Rockets for $400.

No offense to this poster but usually as i see it - maggot favors etc... are for established maggots so i would side with the "no" camp........

Why don't lurkers just register to prove they have been here since a certain date? They don't need to login or post. If the person had a registered date of a year ago, but no posts, is he worthy?

I don't know I think its pretty weak to offer it up and then discriminate against someone because they don't have enough posts. If you were going to be all picky choosy about who you would give it to then why offer it to the collective in the first place. I'm not sure how it would go over If someone offered great deals in ski swap for "1000 post club" only. Sometimes its worth giving people the benefit of the doubt. Besides there are a few people in here with huge post counts but have contributed very little, so I'm not sure post count should really make a difference. And so what if this person wants a free carfax report, thats what you were offering whats the harm in doing the guy a favor.

I think he is bothered by the no posts and registration date of yesterday/today. Someone could easily google free carfax and find his offer. The deal was offered to the collective maggots, not the collective internet savy universe.

    No......
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

I understand that. But you are offering free carfax info to strangers anyway, I don't think you should be put off that someone might register just to get that information. I don;t understand what the difference is whether it is someone on the board or not. Can you say you know everyone on here better than you know this person?

what impression do you want to make?
if you want him/her (it?) to think we're a bunch of cool people, send it.
if you want it to think we're a bunch of dicks, ignore it.
if you want to scare the shit out of it, respond and tell it that they need to post naked pictures of sister.

After a period of posting and replying you do get a sense of cameraderie at least. Funny how communication works that way.

I wouldn't give it to them. I've been on here a while, but don't post that much, and if someone gave a deal to a longstanding maggot with a lot of posts instead of to me, I wouldn't blame them at all. This person probably just googled "free carfax report" and they probably don't even ski.

You at least know that they enjoy similar snow sports. And you know they read this forum. So yes, even if the person is a complete stranger, there is a big difference between someone with 3 posts who registered back in September, and someone with zero posts who registered today.

I don't know I'll trust everyone else's opinion on this. I just think if you are offering it up anyone on a public forum like this you should just be a nice guy about it when somebody asks you for it regardless of when they registered or what their post count is.

I would never join a board that would have a person like me as a member.

In general I agree, but in this circumstance I'm not sure how I feel. I think someone who is a member here at all, no sweat, doesn't matter when they signed up or how many posts they have. The fact that someone joined today, that makes me a little squirmy. It's even possible that the person works for carfax and is trying to get his info to find out who is violating their ToS (because he's not allowed to offer up free reports over the internet to strangers, I'm guessing).

I agree, I was gone for a while from here due to injury w/ no chance of skiing. But register the same day, sounds fishy.
