But I see a lot more smiles on tropical islands than I do in Austria. My impressions of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland included lots of dour faces, with more scowls than smiles. Is there a jolly, fun-loving Austrian culture that I missed?
I prefer the Kangaruh to the Moosewirt, Tippster. But Tommy, I can't believe you've been to Austria and think that? Or do you have something against skiing, drinking and partying??
I think the bottom line with happiness is that it is not defined by your circumstances, it comes from within. I know I've read over and over again that people who have been crippled, disfigured, etc. are in the long term not any happier or unhappier than they were before the accident or disease that changed their life. I would imagine that if you were somehow to transport people from a posh lifestyle to a slum, that once they got through the initial shock, those who are happy positive people would remain that way, and the people who couldn't be happy with every luxury in the world would still be unhappy. Positive people can endure horrible circumstances and still find happiness in their life. True happiness isn't coming from money or your diet, but things like family and friends and personal growth and achievement, none of which requires a fantastic salary, eating or not eating meat, or living in any particular country.
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "Wow, what a Ride!"
