    Skinning/AT jong

So, I bought some Naxo's in the group buy and plan on mounting them to my bros. Next I need to get some skins. I have searched and read through the debates, but am still left wondering what kind/width to buy.

Tell it to me straight......what skins and what width would I need for bros? Ease of use (ie. attaching to the slight twin in the back, etc) is the main factor. I can deal with whatever cost as long as I will end up happy.

110mm Glidelite, same size Ascension with STS-tail or again same size G3.

If you find a bargain, you can get 120mm versions (but the benefits are next to nil).

As long as you don't get that Clipfix, you're OK.

Personally, I'd get the Glidelites (and I own G3's plus Ascensions)... but that would be just 'cause I already have the two others .

This has been killed to death. Seriously, if you don't know what size of skins you need then you shouldn't even be skinning/.

100mm skins would work... You'd only have trouble when switchbacking on a steep hill and hard back snow... Often boot backing would be the faster choise in any case.

But don't boot pack the skin track or you'll get a pole to the back of the head.

So next time, when you feel the necessity to be a cockmonger you can reply with:

    "SEARCH JONG"

And the world will once again be at peace.

So the answer is make sure they have the STS tail system and go anywhere between 100-120mm??

This will mainly be for slackcountry tours out to a closed ski area and back so I am not too worried about switchbacking on steep terrain.

100 fine, 110 max, sts or g3 tail. Or the DIY rat tail, there might be a description of that at wildsnow.com, just to add another option

So skinning on ridges and often than not on soft snow, correct...

Heck, get 95mm Ascensions/Glidelites with STS-tail (or if you can get a better deal on 100/110/120mm skins, then by all means get those)

And yes, STS (or G3's own version) is the way to go...

Happy skinning (no snow here, so I'm spending way too much time on BB's right now).

    I have the same setup.

    110mm Black Diamond Ascension skins.

**You have to trim, and then modify.**
The tip loops don't fit on the tips....so, you must get creative.
I cut out the cable, cut a wire hanger and called it good. Others have used rip cord.

These skins are nice, good glue, easy to use "cheaters", and have super grip.

Yeah, pretty much just ridges and then back up the easy trails of the shut down ski area. At least for my first year. Hopefully just soft stuff, but its the east coast so who knows these days.

Just so I have myself covered for the future I will go with 110, trimmed to fit the waist and modified to fit the tip as NOrcascader indicates.

    Thanks!

    95-120mm ascension sts

if you get anything below 120, it is important to realize is that the tip loop may be too small to fit over the bros. Most shops will just swap them out for free, but if not, they are not that expensive

So if I go 120 i probably won't have to do any modifications to make them fit? If so I am going 120 Ascension sts. Buying from Bc.com so swapping out at a shop isn't an option.

the extra cost of some tip loops is significantly less than the cost of 20 more mm of skin. just keep that in mind.
maybe try calling them on the phone, maybe they can make it work for ya?

Please explain. I've heard the first year had glue problems, but I've had mine for two years and the glue is fine. I haven't had a problem keeping up with the people on Ascensions, and the STS-style tail attachment is 1000x better than Clipfix, which sucks.

STS attachment on whatever skins you get is a definite

I've never been back to timber ridge but go bigger(ie 110) if you want to skin up steeper terrain, but if your just going to be skinning on green circle type catwalks, you could go to something like 95 and not have any problems whatsoever.

Glidelites glide better, Ascensions climb better
For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was

The difference in grip and skinning angle between wall-to-wall cut 120mm skins and straight 95mm skins is next to nothing,

except if you're like me and occasionally will accidentally pressure the unskinned edge of the ski and slide backwards.

Its happened to me enough times that I like a wall to wall if I'm going up at a high angle

I agree that the difference in traction is negligible if you can avoid being a JONG dumbass like me

    Have to disagree with you.

Wall to wall (or close to) makes a hell of a difference on uphill traverses, steep ramps, negotiating tight steep trees, worn slippy skin tracks etc.

Original poster said money wasn't an issue so he might as welll do it right.
