    WWMD: IT Consultant Hourly Rate

Have an opportunity to moonlight coding some forms in dot net and need some direction in terms of the hourly rate I should be negotiating. Any mags out there with consulting experience that can help?

By coding some forms I assume you mean writing code. I would think around $100/hour.

    dotnet? $100/hr? I wish.
The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.

Coding forms and writing code are not the same thing at all, you'll probably be lucky to get $12/hr. for coding forms if that's what you're doing.

It is really all over the place depending on your experience, type of work (entry level to senior/architect level work), how much subject matter expertise is required and of course what is the value of the work to the client.

Your description makes is sound pretty basic. Plus, you are moonlight – not available during day for calls and on-site meetings. It sounds like $40-50 per hour.

Now if you are providing a more full service offering – going from Business requirements to full implementation and you are operating as an insured corporation you can get a much higher rate. (w/ higher quality clients too)

Given that you are moonlighting, I recommend that you make sure that this potential client is not going to turn into a pain in the ass that sucks up all your time.

Good luck. It can be a good way to fund the purchase of some new equipment.

Creating web-based forms to interact with an existing database, so doing both.

The number I had in my head for freelance was in the $40-60 range, which seems consistent with Stormday's impression, but trying to gather all the input I can.

Cash under the table (No 1099) = 45 Per Hour 10% penalty for >30 payment
IF you are being paid W-2 = 55 Per Hour
If you are being paid 1099 = 65 per hour.

If you were subcontracting through a (Body Shop) they would be charging the client between 90 and 120 per hour loaded rate.
