Here is the story I posted on KZone. And some pics.
Waiting to go to the ortho at 2:30 today
I was having a pretty good day. In the morning, I was going down lower bear claw and this woman came up to me and said "I know you're a good skier, but you came very close to me and scared me" I thought to myself "she said I'm a good skier!!!" And I apologized to her. But looking up bear claw, it was like freakin times square.
Later, I was coming down after the Viper pit, close to the ridge just before lower bear claw, and I went to skiers right. There were about 10 roller coaster bumps which threw me. I ended up getting out of control and taking down a man and a woman. I apologized profusely. The rest of the crew pretended they didn't know me
Was tooling around with Ty, MtnMan, Phantom, a few others from the Basher house, KillingtonKoyote and wife, and some others I prolly forgot. This was after lunch, we decided to go over to needles via the SS quad. Did the headwall, then over to Panic button. Did one complete run down Needles - bumps were getting big. I guess they had been blowing on it for a few days. Decent snow.
I was making a turn right and I almost crashed right into a snowboarder. Turns out it was BoozeTan - small world!
We then did a BDFR, then back up to do another Panic to Needles.
The bumps were bigger this time, but I was making some good lines on them. Had the RC4s on.
Just below the snowshed crossover, I was holding a pretty good line. Suddenly, my left ski just get STUCK in a trough, my body kept going downhill but my left leg stayed put.
I could FEEL my knee come part. the lower part of the left leg basically went LEFT at what I'm guessing to be a 10 or 20 degree angle (or maybe more, it's hard to tell) Didn't feel or hear any popping.
THEN my ski came off.
As this happened I SCREAMED in pain. I think some of the crew heard that and a bunch of them stopped. I was hyperventilating to try to get over the shock of the pain. THey asked me if I was alright and this time I said no. I think MtnMan set up the crossed skis in back of me and t here were about 5 or 6 members of the crew hangin there with me.
There was a mountain ambassador there within like 1 minute and she radioed for ski patrol. Within about 5 minutes Bob showed up (I know him from the K ski club). He strapped me into the sled, I gave my camera to Killington Koyote who took somme pics (apparently MtnMan did too).
Bob took me down through the moguls. Left tilt, right tilt, left tilt, right tilt... Once in a while he would get stuck and this other trainee would help him pull me out of the trough.
We got to the bottom of needles where a snowmobile was waiting. I transferred sleds to one that was hitched up to the snowmobile. This is when the fun began.
you have to hold onto one of the straps so you don't get spit out the back. You also have to wear your goggles due to the spray that goes in your face. And breathe the exhaust (cough cough). But the worst is when they hit a bump and your head smashes against the bottom of the sled. I picked my head up a lot to avoid that.
Anyway, they got me over to the K1 lodge, and I used ski poles and some helping hands to go into the first aid room. They took off my boots and looked at the knee - it was pretty swollen. THey asked me that I wanted to do, and I told them I wanted to go over to the medical clinic. So they took me over there in a van.
Over there, they took xrays (which are pretty worthless when it comes to ligaments). The xray showed a little round foreign body - prolly there from when I partially tore my ACL last February in Low Rider (doing a kick turn of all things).
THen 2 docs pulled on the knee, for what seemed like 15 minutes. Based on what I t old them and their pulling, they guessed I had completely torn the ACL, probably tore the MCL (thats where my knee came apart) and probably had medial cartilage damage. But of course the MRI will bear that out (or not).
I'm wearing my Donjoy defiance on that knee when I have to move around (I wasn't wearing it on the hill because I had been meaning to have it a adjusted - its a bit too tight. Oh well, that might have saved me). I asked the doc if I could ski this weekend and he laughed...
Now it's really black and blue, I guess thats to be expected. The docs gave me some exercises to do, and I'm gonna call the doc down on LI that I go to who'll check it out and order up the MRI.
Who knows? Maybe it's just a bad sprain. Alls I know is the knee is not supposed to bend the way I felt it bend.
I'll be up next weekend. Hopefully by then I'll know exactly whats going on.
