Level I Avalanche Class
This 1 evening classroom and 2 day field course covers basic identification of weather, snowpack, terrain features and human factors that contribute to avalanche conditions and accidents. Students will participate in classroom and field sessions with an emphasis on field time performing stability evaluation, route-finding and rescue using transceivers. Participants must have a transceiver, shovel and a method of traveling in the backcountry (skins, snowshoes). Transceivers are available for rent: $10 for two days. Students should be in reasonable condition for winter backcountry travel.

Steve Karkanen, West Central Montana Avalanche Center, former Professional Ski Patrolman, American Avalanche Association, National Avalanche School graduate.
Dudley Improta, PSIA Backcountry Ski Instructor, American Avalanche Institute and National Avalanche School graduate.
Pre-registration is required.
You can register with the UM Outdoor Program on the UM Campus (243-5172). You must pre-register. Class is limited to 15 participants. Cost for the class is $100 and includes two one-way lifts.
